The NHS Mycology Reference Centre, Manchester offers a highly specialised diagnostic service primarily serving Manchester, the north of England and Scotland but also receives daily referrals from throughout the UK and beyond.

We are continuing to expand and now have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and hard-working HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist to join our well-established and friendly team, working within a modern, well equipped, fully UKAS ISO15189 accredited laboratory.

This post is part-time, working 32.5 hours per week, 09:30 - 17:00 Monday to Friday.

To apply, you must be HCPC accredited as a Biomedical Scientist, with experience working in a Clinical Microbiology/Mycology laboratory.

As a practical test is an important part of the interview process, interviews will take place face-to-face.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist the Head of Service in providing a comprehensive scientific service (analytical and interpretative) by the Mycology Reference Centre to nationally accepted standards
  • To deliver a broad range of complex, specialised and non-routine scientific work requiring skilled performance with a high level of individual responsibility
  • To maintain a high standard of work and contribute to developing the service of the laboratory so that service delivery is safe, effective, and economical and follows best practice according to ISO15189 standard

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Biomedical Sciences Degree or equivalent
  • Must have HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist


Desirable

  • Masters degree in medical microbiology/molecular microbiology


Experience

Essential

  • Microbiology experience, within a working environment


Desirable

  • Mycology experience
  • Experience of a variety of molecular techniques
  • Familiar with equipment and procedures in use in the MRCM
  • Experience of laboratory computer systems


Skills

Essential

  • Can perform complex manual tests with a high degree of accuracy and precision
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills


Knowledge

Essential

  • Committed to Continual Professional Development and regularly updates knowledge
  • Understands and applies principles of internal quality assurance and control
  • Knowledge of methods and instrumentation


Desirable

  • Knowledge of ISO 15189 Standard
  • Good knowledge of medical mycology
  • Some understanding of recent developments relevant to mycological testing
