We are looking for a full time Band 6 Clinical Research Nurse to join our Clinical Infection Research Team to manage and oversee a portfolio of clinical research studies relating to HIV, Infectious Diseases, Sexual Health, ENT, Audiology and Ophthalmology, Based in the Clinical Research Facility in Sussex House Brighton. Clinical Research is an integral part of the HIV/SHAC service. We are currently conducting a portfolio of national, international and locally generated studies, these include multi-centre clinical trials of Anti-retroviral treatments, HIV prevention, HIV and ageing, Sexual Health, antimicrobial resistance, Infectious diseases, ENT, audiology and Ophthalmology. This post is ideally suited to a Registered Nurse with a background in related specialties who wish to develop and broaden their experience. Relevant training will be given. If you are a Registered Nurse who is motivated and enthusiastic, able to work autonomously and as part of a team who has an interest in clinical research we would like to hear from you. Informal visits are recommended and encouraged. We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

Main duties of the job

Has the knowledge and expertise to undertake the role of planning and co-ordinating a portfolio of clinical research trialsas allocated by managerrelating to HIV, Infectious Diseases, Sexual Health, ENT, Audiology, Ophthalmology and Urology. Responsible for the recruitment of research patients/participants, in conjunction with the Principal Investigator/Chief Investigator/ Research Team. Assess patients, plan, implement and manage care. Carry out specialist nursing procedures and treatments as directed by the research protocols. Provide specialist advice to patients/participants and carers with regard to the clinical research and specialist areas. Will be required to supervise other members of the nursing team and support staff. To work flexibly.

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of research protocols and clinical care and treatment, assists in the interpretation of data relevant to the patients/participants condition and progress within research trials.
  • Assist in the identification of patient/participant problems and needs of the patient, their carers, senior nursing staff and other staff as appropriate. Record and report all adverse and serious adverse events/reactions to the relevant local personnel and external bodies as appropriate.
  • Participate in the control, storage and competent administration of drugs and treatments as prescribed according to the NMC guidelines, the Trusts Guidelines for the Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines, research protocols and guidance from sponsors.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the clinical skills required to care and treat the research patient/participant and with appropriate training develop new skills and new clinical trial treatments as required for service development.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of care to facilitate the continuity of care for patients transferred to other areas.
  • Promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff.
  • Maintain the patients respect, dignity and privacy and to act with kindness and courtesy to all members of the public.
  • Be aware of essential procedures and take appropriate action in the event of cardiac arrest, fire or major incident.
  • Ensure practice is evidence based and is in line with local policies and procedures.
