Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) is a modern, well-equipped facility in the heart of historic Bristol.

We are seeking to recruit to this permanent, full-time post, an enthusiastic, self-motivated Clinical Technologist to a Band 6 role within the Radiotherapy Treatment Planning team. The successful candidate will have a wide range of treatment planning experience and will be responsible for producing and checking highly complex IMRT, VMAT, SABR and other radiotherapy treatment plans including Gamma Knife treatments. They will also assist in radiotherapy equipment dosimetry and quality control.

Applicants who do not have sufficient post qualification experience for appointment at Band 6 may be considered for appointment at Band 5, please state if your application is for consideration at Band 5.

Hours of working will need to be flexible and will reflect the needs of the department. Treatment planning staff have the option of working from home, for up to 40% of their contracted hours. Part time will be considered.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for producing and checking highly complex IMRT, VMAT, SABR and other radiotherapy treatment plans and will also assist in radiotherapy equipment dosimetry and quality control.

Bristol is a large centre with five linear accelerators (including IGRT), delivering IMRT, VMAT and SABR, two dedicated CT scanners, high dose rate brachytherapy, Gamma Knife, RayStation treatment planning system, MOSAIQ oncology information management system and all of the equipment and infrastructure for training that would be expected of a department of this size and complexity.

The successful candidate will work with other clinical technologists and clinical scientists within the radiotherapy physics unit and in collaboration with Clinical Engineers, Radiographers, Clinical Oncologists and Specialist Registrars to enable the provision of safe and effective radiotherapy for our patients.

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree in Clinical Technology, Therapeutic Radiography or equivalent
• To be on, or eligible to join, the Register of Clinical Technologists, or equivalent registration scheme

Desirable

• Degree with strong medical physics component

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

• Experience of producing simple and complex treatment plans for a range of clinical sites

Desirable

• Experience of carrying out checking of treatment plans for some treatment sites
• Experience of carrying out quality control checks of radiotherapy equipment. The post holder must know and understand enough about radiation and the radiotherapy equipment that generates the radiation to make safe and reliable measurements in the quality control process

Skills and Abilities

Essential

• The post holder must be able to be sufficiently highly dextrous to position delicate instruments such as radiation dose meters accurately under the radiation beam to be measured without damaging the sensitive devices
• Another example is the need for fine control of input devices on radiotherapy treatment planning computers in order that the delineations of organs and target volumes are made with the intended accuracy
• Good numeracy and logical thinking skills are needed to apply and adapt the class solutions in order to achieve the optimum treatment plan
• In visiting the linear accelerator to perform quality control, which is generally done on a daily basis, the post holder must be strong enough to move dosimetry equipment weighing up to 12 Kg, the post holder must be able to move the material in and out of the beam multiple times on each quality control visit

Desirable

• Good IT skills and knowledge of computing packages for Word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages and databases

• Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of accuracy
• Ability to work effectively in a busy team and adapt to change
• Good attention to detail
• The post holder must have the emotional resilience to spend time working with, and in the vicinity of, terminally ill cancer patients including young such patients
