Children's Speech and Language Therapist ( Early Years, Mainstream Schools and Special Schools)

Do you want to develop your skills in meeting the needs of children and young people with speech language and communication difficulties in clinics, mainstream schools and special schools?

The Haringey Speech and Language Therapy Service works in clinics, special schools and all primary and secondary schools in Haringey alongside Specialist Language Support and Autism Teachers from the Local Authority.

We have Band 5 posts based within the Early Years and Mainstream Schools and Special School Services. There is the opportunity to work across two teams and develop your clinical skills in both areas. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Speech and Language Therapist who is keen to work with children with speech language and communication difficulties in these settings.

You will be responsible for your own caseloads of children and will provide assessment and intervention for children in addition to providing support and advice to school staff and parents.

This post will suit a newly qualified SLT, including those graduating this year, returning SLTs or SLTs from other specialities wishing to work in schools.

Our large and friendly team comprises newly qualified and experienced therapists. There are specialist SLTs for children with complex needs emotional and behavioural difficulties speech and voice disorders deafness fluency selective mutism DLD learning difficulties and regional Makaton trainers who will be at hand to support you. You will also have your own clinical supervisor who will be able to offer you weekly, fortnightly or monthly supervision depending on your experience. A senior SLT will complete your competencies if needed, appraisals and Personal Development Plans with you.

Job responsibilities

  • To carry a personal clinical caseload maintaining a high level of professional competence and to demonstrate developing clinical expertise with supervision.
  • To assess, differentially diagnose, plan and implement therapy for children with speech, language and/or communication difficulties on own caseload.
  • To work effectively with clients, carers, education staff and colleagues around individual case management providing advice, guidance and support as necessary and involving them in the planning and prioritisation of care wherever possible
  • To reflect on clinical practice adequately identifying strengths & needs of clients, reviewing their response to therapy and providing evidence of sound clinical judgement.
  • To monitor and review the progress of children using evaluation/outcome measurement tools.
  • To adapt practice to meet individual client/carers circumstances, taking into account cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • To produce accurate, & detailed reports, therapy programmes, advice and information as necessary in a timely manner
  • To respond to the requirements of the Children and Families Act 2014 completing written advice which will contribute to Education, Health and Care assessments for children/young people who may have Special Educational Needs.
  • To support the effective transition of children between schools and other services as appropriate.
  • To refer children to other Health, Education or Social Services professionals as necessary.
  • To undertake home visits, as necessary, in compliance with Home Visiting Safety Policy.

    Education / Qualifications

    Essential

    • Diploma, Degree or MSC in Speech and Language Therapy
    • HCPC Registration
    • Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists

    Desirable

    • An ability to speak another language relevant to the Haringey population - especially Turkish, Polish, Somali or a West African language


    Knowledge & Experience

    Essential

    • Experience of working with children in clinics and schools
    • Experience of running groups with children
    • Experience of training others e.g. school staff/parents/carers
    • Awareness of clinical governance and how this is reflected in your day to day work
    • Theoretical knowledge of alternative/augmentative communication at undergraduate level e.g. symbols
    • Knowledge of Child Protection guidelines
    • Knowledge of the National Curriculum
    • Knowledge of the EHCP process
