The Children's Community nursing team is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Child Branch nurse with acute nursing experience to join our friendly and dynamic team to cover maternity leave.

The Children's Community Nursing Service which is based in the Hospital is well established and aims to facilitate seamless transition of neonates and children from hospital into their homes. Our philosophy is to deliver the highest quality, evidence based, and family centred care to our children and their families both in hospital and in patient's homes.

The individual applying for this post will have experience in the nursing care of children from admission through to discharge. They will be adept in the co-ordination of care and discharge planning processes. In addition, they will also be motivated and committed to continuing professional development and demonstrate excellent communication, role modelling and leadership skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will ideally have some experience of nursing children in the community and will be competent in the care of central lines. A clean UK driving licence is essential.

With a positive attitude to your professional development and support from our clinical facilitator, excellent training opportunities will be available to enable you to enhance your career in Children's Community Nursing.

To work in conjunction with the Neonatal unit, Ward 4, Ward 5 and Paediatric Emergency Department (PED) to provide a smooth transition from hospital to home for those children requiring ongoing nursing care and support, including children with complex needs (e.g. oncology patients, palliative care and pre-existing long-term conditions).

To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for these children whilst working in collaboration with all in-patient areas, providing nursing advice and support to other health professionals relating to community practice.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

To provide the highest standard of evidenced based nursing care for both the children and their families in line with local and nationally agreed standards and guidelines.

To holistically assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of patients within their sphere of responsibility and escalating to clinicians when appropriate.

Professional

To at all times demonstrate a professional approach to work in accordance with the NMC The Code (2018)

Is required to have a working knowledge of the Childrens National Service Framework (2004) and understand the nursing responsibilities in relation to this publication.

Management

To provide support to the senior sister and senior staff, accepting responsibility for specific tasks which contribute to the smooth running of the childrens community nursing services.

To promote effective communication, between all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Education

Maintain professional development keeping knowledge and skills up to date, taking part in appropriate and regular learning and professional development activities that aim to maintain and develop your competence and improve your performance in line within the NMC The Code (2018)

To take personal responsibility for own development and updating to ensure that they meet the requirements of the professional revalidation process.

Other Duties

The post holder will be expected to hold a clean, current UK Driving Licence.

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential

  • Registered Children's Nurse
  • Degree level study in healthcare
  • Level 3 Safeguarding training
  • Practice Supervisor/Practice Assessor Degree level or above programme of study in Paediatric Oncology Nursing


Desirable

  • V300 Independent and supplementary Nurse Prescribing
  • Advanced communications skills training or prepared to work towards


Experience

Essential

  • Variety of experience of nursing children in an acute setting post registration
  • An understanding of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young peoples
  • Ability to work effectively as a lone worker, as a member of the nursing team and together with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to communicate effectively with professionals, children and families
  • Experience in audit, research, development and review of clinical policies, risk management, teaching and assessment


Desirable

  • Community nursing experience


Skills

Essential

  • Ability to use initiative
  • Able to assess, plan, implement evaluate and deliver holistic basic nursing care
  • Ability to communicate with both the child, their family and the MDT
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of national guidelines relevant to neonates and paediatrics

  • Experience in administration of chemotherapy.
