This is a new, exciting and innovative post arising due to service expansion and reorganisation of previous posts. This post offers a rare opportunity to work across services in acute and community neurological services.

The post holder will provide inpatient neuropsychiatric liaison services to the Wessex Neurological Centre (a tertiary neurosciences centre based at University Hospital Southampton) and provide outpatient clinic follow-up. They will also play a vital role in MDTs for the Epilepsy and Deep brain stimulation services, alongside colleagues in neurology, neurosurgery and psychology. They will be the Responsible Clinician for a 10 bedded inpatient neuropsychiatric rehabilitation unit, the Kite Unit, located at the nearby Western Community Hospital. The Kite Unit provides a unique service on the south coast. Patients have experienced a neurological event or illness (e.g. traumatic brain injury, stroke, anoxia, infection) and may have a premorbid history of mental health problems. They will have behavioural, cognitive, or psychiatric problems that cannot be managed in other neurorehabilitation services. Patients are jointly managed with a Specialty doctor in Neurological rehabilitation and the ward works closely with our adjacent physical neurological rehabilitation ward. This provides an opportunity to provides seamless neuropsychiatric care from acute neurological centre through to specialist neurobehavioural rehabilitation.

Solent NHS Trust is one of the largest community providers in the NHS with annual revenue of around £181 million and with over 3800 staff. We provide a range of community and specialist mental health services to over a million people in Southampton, Portsmouth and parts of Hampshire. The Trust has an ambitious vision to make a difference by keeping more people healthy, safe and independent in, or close to their own homes.

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) is one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, was in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care. The Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) provides a dedicated, integrated 24 hour acute neurosurgical and neurological assessment, investigation and treatment service to adults and children from Hampshire, Isle of Wight, South Wiltshire, West Sussex and the Channel Islands.

Solent and UHS work closely together to provide an integrated pathway of acute and community care for patients with a neurological diagnosis with UHS providing the acute care and diagnostics and Solent providing neurological rehabilitation inpatient and community services. The postholder will provide input under a service level agreement to the Wessex Neurological Centre and be employed by Solent NHS Trust. Working across both Trusts the post-holder will be able to access the array of educational opportunities available in both trusts.
