Liaison psychiatry is the sub specialty which provides psychiatric treatment to patients attending general hospitals either in the emergency department or those admitted to in-patient wards.

Therefore, it deals with the interface between physical and psychological health and predominantly works to ensure the delivery of safe, recovery focused care to individuals potentially posing a high level of risk to themselves

The role is a band 5 developmental post and is suitable for either newly qualified Band 5 nurses or those aspiring to develop into a band 6 role in the next 12 months.

The role comes with a clear development plan to develop skills within the specialty of liaison psychiatry

The appointable candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working with patients aged 18 and over, completing initial assessments within the Emergency Department or on the general wards, and working closely with the Liaison Psychiatry Consultants and wider MDT

The post holder will also have the opportunity to be involved in co-facilitating educational sessions to the Southampton General Hospital staff and supporting QI projects

There is ongoing support available through the SHFT preceptorship Programme (if required) as well as regular management supervision, training, peer support sessions, reflective practice and daily team meetings

Main duties of the job

The function of this band 5 developmental Psychiatric Liaison Nurse role is to develop the key core skills and competencies for a Liaison Psychiatry nurse and to demonstrate the ability to function in a Band 6 role over a 12 18-month period

Liaison Psychiatry is the sub specialty of Psychiatry involving assessment and management of mental health needs related to physical problems

Clinical presentations span a wide spectrum from organic psychosis, severe depression or somatoform disorder to adjustment reactions, delirium, dementia and abnormal health behaviour

This service aims to provide acute hospital staff with specialist advice on the management of psychological problems

The team prioritises on risk, location and complexity of referrals and coordinates resources appropriately. Autonomous working, diagnostic skills, formulation, and comprehensive risk assessment are important to make a safe management and discharge plan
