An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced SACT nurse to progress into a role of a Nurse Practitioner - Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT). This role is a senior position working clinically within Ward 36 to support, educate and develop staff nurses within the role.

You will be expected to lead on education and training within Ward 36, supporting new staff and existing staff to enhance their knowledge within the speciality of Oncology/Haematology and more specifically in SACT administration.

Ward 36 is a fast paced day unit for patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy and supportive therapy treatments such as blood and platelet transfusions.

In addition to the elective day unit it also manages an acute emergency admissions area for patients on cancer treatment who are unwell and need reviewed and potentially admitted.

Ward 36's operational hours are 08:00-19:00 7 days a week inclusive of Bank Holidays (excluding Christmas Day).

We also have a satellite unit in Cramlington running clinics every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday - where you will rotate to on a regular basis and be the nurse in charge of this unit whilst on shift.

Staff rotate between Ward 36 and Ward 36 emergencies at NCCC and the Cramlington Centre.

The shift pattern is 4 days a week working x2 Long Day shifts (08:00-19:00) and x2 Early shifts (08:00-17:00) with regular weekend working expected.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role are to support and educate staff nurses within the ward through regular direct clinical supervision and hands on clinical working to develop their competence in all clinical skills and SACT administration. Additionally it is expected that you will lead on providing teaching and education sessions to the nursing team weekly.

Other aspects of the role include:

• Performing bone marrow biopsies in a nurse led clinic
• Teaching and liaising with external providers/representatives to develop training for staff
• Utilising clinical skills to assess patients
• Non-Medical Authorisation of blood products

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

• Significant experience in Oncology and/or Haematology
• UKONS SACT Passport and current evidence of administering SACT
• Practice Supervisor and Assessor/Mentorship
• IV Drug Competent
• Cannulation skills
• Venepuncture Skills
• CVC management skills

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

• Accredited SACT course
• Teaching qualification/course
• Evidence of audit/service improvement
• Leadership qualification/experience
• Non-Medical Authorisation of blood products or willingness to undertake
• IRMER trained or willingness to undertake

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g., endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group.

To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing towards the delivery of a quality service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice:

• To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care.
• Will provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need.
• Supports the clinical team to manage a defined caseload, activity to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocolsand training.
• Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others.
• Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g., AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team.
• Liaises with Patient Services Coordinator.

Essential

• Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
• Current NMC registration
• Diploma plus specialist qualifications / experience within specialist area prepared to take degree level study
• Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship) if relevant to role
• Recognised specialist qualification in SACT administration

Desirable

• Degree in health-related subject
• Working towards or educated to Master's level
• Clinical Skills Course or willingness to undertake
