University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint Controls Technicians to develop and expand an already established small specialist team dedicated to the development of building automation, security, other electronic and electromechanical systems as well as ICT based systems.

This role will be principally based across the large and complex acute hospital estate at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and its satellite sites, although support across the Trust may be required at times.

The Controls Technicians will report to the Estates Officer (Engineering Controls and Automation) and will be supported by Electrical, Mechanical and Building leads who will be responsible for the development of compliance and development in their respective specialist fields.

The successful candidate will need to be able to consider complex issues and conflicting pressures, to deliver the best outcomes to the site, this role will require a self-motivated individual with a multi-disciplinary ability and skills to assess and manage fast moving situations whilst motivating and supporting and developing a team culture and mentality within the workforce.

The nature of this role will require the successful applicant to take part in out of hours working as required for the needs of the Trust and a rostered provision of On Call management.

A continental day shift is being discussed to provide 7-day provision of service but is not in place currently.

Main duties of the job

*Ensuring efficient and effective maintenance and operation of plant, equipment and services controlled and managed by the building energy management and building automation systems.

*Continually develop, install, configure and commission new and/or replacement intelligent controllers on the Trust wide dedicated building management system network.

*To support the Trusts security manager as required on matters including but not exclusively of door access and CCTV.

*To support the Estates Team in matters of ICT systems and networking exclusive to Estates.

*To undertake on-call duties as part of the on-call team to ensure that emergencies occurring outside normal hours are attended to.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • *Basic education to GCSE/'O' Level in Maths and English or post-Secondary Education training in a relevant field


Desirable

  • Formal Schneider Training
  • An equivalent qualification such as NVQ Level 3 in a relevant Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering discipline.
  • Or,
  • BTEC/ONC in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering


Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of safe systems of work
  • *Completion of a registered apprenticeship or structured training program in Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering for a minimum of 3 years,
  • Plus
  • At least 2 years post training, site experience having demonstrated high versatility and flexibility.


Desirable

  • Previous experience in the Health Service
  • 3 years practical post apprenticeship experience in a building/ engineering trade or building services
  • Previous experience installing and maintaining and Building Management System
  • Familiar with HVAC systems and/or access control


Additional Criteria

Essential

  • *Ability to clearly communicate to line managers and trade staff on issues/ problems arising from BMS problems.
  • *Computer literate with accurate keyboard inputting
  • *Ability to work without supervision and confident to take decisions based on own ability.
  • *Capable of working to deadlines
  • *Ability to read engineering/ building drawings
  • *Satisfactory DBS check
  • *Good previous attendance record
  • *Flexible working approach
  • *Available to undertake overtime.


Desirable

  • *Ability to support and manage a Team
  • *Understanding of customer service
  • *Ability to train new users on the operation of the system.
