Specialist Speech & Language Therapist in Out-patients for Adult Acquired Disorders

Would you like to use and develop your specialist skills with out-patients within a supportive SaLT team based at Salisbury District Hospital? This fixed term part-time post is to cover a secondment leave for approx 12 to 18 months.

Qualifications required include a degree in Speech & Language Therapy, and postgraduate training (or qualification) in adult dysphagia and being registered with the Health & Care Professions Council. Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists is preferred.

Postgraduate experience required includes autonomous assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adults with swallowing, communication and voice impairments from a wide range of acquired neurological conditions, ideally with experience of having worked in out-patient and outreach settings. It would be desirable for the candidate to have had some basic awareness training in instrumental dysphagia assessments and treatments. The applicants must be flexible, be able to use initiative well,undertake clinical work efficiently,have effective caseload management and good clinical decision-making skills.Experience of planning and delivering training courses to other professionals, and undertaking clinical audit are desirable.

Main duties of the job

Your work would include out-patients with some outreach in patients' homes when they are unable to attend clinics. You will have responsibility to manage patient assessment & treatment decisions, caseload organisation, and ensure excellent liaison with SaLT and MDT colleagues.

You would contribute to the development of the SaLT team, and this may include student supervision, NQP supervision, and in house CPD.You may be involved in wider SaLT service initiatives such as improving MDT working in specific areas (e.g. PD, MND MDTs, mouthcare, and SaLT Link Nurse recruitment and training).

The SLT team embraces new ways of working and has worked hard to be at the forefront of helpful and emerging technology. Therefore you will also provide our patients with access to a range of instrumental investigations for swallow and voice assessments, and will use instrumental devices for treatment where appropriate. For patients with communication disorders, you will use traditional and computer based therapy programs as needed, and you will have access to a range of local low and high tech AAC equipment.

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Several years working as qualified SLT working in NHS settings with adult patients
  • Competency in and experience of independently assessing and treating adult dysphagia
  • Experience of assessing and treating adults with acquired speech, language & communication
  • Experience of a wide range of adult acquired and progressive neurological disorders
  • Experience of working in an NHS out-patient setting


Desirable

  • Experience of instrumental and computer based assessment or treatments
  • Demonstrating EBP and effective treatment and caseload management
  • Experience of providing training to other SLTs and Health Care colleagues
  • Experience of assessing and treating voice disorders


Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Speech & Language Therapy
