The post holder will work within the Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Nurse Specialist team providing specialist advice and support to both patients and their families during the GI diagnostic and treatment pathway. The specialist nurse will work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team and will work across GI cancer services including screening, surgical and oncology services.
The post holder will work alongside the Cancer Management Team providing clinical excellence for all patients with cancer. They will contribute to the strategic vision for cancer within the Trust, and Thames Valley Strategic Clinical Network, working towards meeting National Cancer Quality Standards. Emphasis will be placed on education, development and empowerment of colleagues and Trust employees who interact with patients under the care of the GI services.
Main duties of the job
1. Act as a Key Worker for patients throughout the diagnostic, treatment and metastatic pathway liaising across all care settings.
2. Provide expert knowledge and ensure safe care is delivered to the patient along the GI care pathway.
3. Works as an autonomous practitioner managing and organizing own workload, reflecting the core components of the specialist nurse role i.e. clinical, management, research and education.
4. Provides support and expertise to the Colorectal Stratified Follow Up Pathway, including delivering Stratified Follow Up Nurse Led Clinics according to specific guidelines and within scope of practice.
5. Acts as a clinical resource utilizing specialist knowledge, supporting staff education and development across the Trust to enhance patient's quality of care.

- Experience at Band 5/6
- Educated to degree level or willing to study
- Demonstrates ongoing continuing professional development

- Oncology Nursing and/or Advanced Cancer Care Nursing qualification

- Psychological Level 2 training
- Advanced Communication Skills
- Recognized teaching course
Experience

- Post registration experience including caring for / or experience in GI care patients in screening, surgical or oncology setting
- Experience in GI cancer care nursing
- Teaching experience
- Knowledge of audit and its effectiveness within health care
- Experience in document preparation data collection and report writing
- IT skills
- Able to demonstrate service improvement activities
- Demonstrates awareness of the National Cancer Agenda
