Applications are invited for a full time Band 5 Sleep Nurse. The Sleep Nurse will form part of a specialised multidisciplinary team providing expert assessment and treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea within BCULHB East. They will act as a source of expertise on the management of these patients and provide an advisory service to other health care professionals, patients and carers with the support of the band 6 nurse team and multidisciplinary colleagues.

The post holder will provide nurse led outpatient and telephone support clinics, supporting patients with initiation of CPAP and ongoing management, liaising with the wider Respiratory and Ear, Nose and Throat teams. The post holder will manage a designated caseload of patients and organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time and resources. They will have a clear understanding of the management pathways for sleep disordered breathing and be able to recognise and respond appropriately to situations arising from related conditions.

The post hold will be required to have the ability to use computer systems for data entry, spreadsheets and databases, checking of patient's records, emailing, preparing teaching packages and documentation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidenced-based nursing care, working collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families, within the sleep apnoea service.

Assist in the management and organisation of the Sleep Service and participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members.

Able to work independently within guidelines/standard operative procedures to provide procedures and therapies towards the investigation and treatment of sleep disordered breathing.

Job responsibilities

Will be required (dependent on level of experience) to take charge of a group of Sleep Patients with the guidance and supervision of the person with continuing responsibility/ Nurse in charge.

Co-ordinate the work of healthcare support workers, assistant practitioners, students, preceptorship nurse (depending on level of experience) in the delivery of nursing care.

Aptitude & Ability

Essential

  • NMC Registered
  • Post-registration evidence in direct nursing care
  • Experience of providing holistic nursing care
  • Clear understanding of contract of care
  • Ability to adapt to different working environments


Desirable

  • Evidence of post registration study and training
  • Attended courses on sleep medicine.
  • British Sleep Society/ARTP Sleep Membership
  • Experience within Sleep Medicine and have an understanding of the holistic needs of this group
  • Able to work autonomously within departmental protocols.
  • Have empathy and tact towards the patient group and colleagues.
