This is a fixed term 1 year role to cover maternity leave.

Band 6 position will require possession of a specialist diploma from the Institute of Biomedical Science. In the case of no appointable band 6 candidates, experienced, registered biomedical scientists will be considered, to be paid at band 5.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

1. To process biological samples including blood, urine, faeces cerebral spinal fluid and other tissues, taking personal responsibility for the quality and authorisation of the results, which are used in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease.

2. To possess highly developed specialist scientific skills.

3. The post holder will demonstrate the high level of skill to perform complex manual, semi-automated and automated analytical techniques as applicable, meeting turnaround times with prompt reporting of results used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

4. The post holder will be required to provide complex information relating to test results, which may be sensitive in nature.

5. As a state registered Scientist with the Health Professions Council understand the pathology of disease in relationship to the results produced whilst being aware of their significance in the authorisation of patient results with reference to the normal ranges.

6. Will be aware of the clinical significance of results produced and using this knowledge to perform appropriate supplementary tests/investigations relevant to providing a complete report to requesting clinicians.

7. To plan and prioritise workload of Band 5 Biomedical Scientists, Trainee BMS and support staff.

1. To manage a small team in the Autoantibodies section within Immunology

2. To participate in routine daily read of immunofluorescence work

3. To use statistical packages to monitor quality control trends and analyse for various Immunology machines.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable Experience of Immunofluorescence reading
  • Demonstrable experience within a diagnostic Immunology setting.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the pathology of autoimmune disorders


Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience with specialist techniques within the discipline the post holder is expected to work.
  • Participation in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences CPD scheme
  • Using statistical packages for interpretation of quality controls.


Qualifications

Essential

  • State registration with Health Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Successful completion of IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Immunology
  • Educated to BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the Heath Care Professions Council


Aptitude and Abilites

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills, being able to deal with patients and staff at all levels of the organisation with tact and diplomacy
  • Knowledge of all health and safety issues relating to laboratory activity
  • Accuracy/precision while under pressure


Desirable

  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of laboratory information systems
