Student Health Visitor positions - Commencing Jan 2025, full-time over 12 months or part-time over 24 months

Are you an NMC registered nurse (child, adult, mental health or learning disability) or an NMC registered midwife interested in a career in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing - Health Visiting?

We welcome applications from 3rd year nursing and midwifery students, however your NMC registration needs to be active before the course start date (January 2025).

Community Public Health Nurse- Health Visitor. This course is offered full-time (37.5 hours/week) or part-time (18.75hours/week)at level 7(Post Graduate Diploma).

Main duties of the job

Health Visitors & School Nurses lead the Healthy Child Programme in Brighton and Hove and West Sussex.

Health Visitors work with children aged between 0 and 5 to provide key public health messages to all families to identify and assess health or development needs, and then offer targeted support where it is most needed, with the aim that every child has the best possible start to life. Health Visitors have contact with families in homes, community venues and virtually from the antenatal period up to school entry.

As a student, you will be an adult learner and this requires you to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, resilient and dedicated to the role, with a keen interest in public health, and as a qualified SCPHN you will be leading the Healthy Child Programme (HCP). You will have a passion for public health and improving outcomes for children in West Sussex and Brighton & Hove through progressive universalism and early intervention. We are looking for a solution-focused nurse or midwife that is able to demonstrate an understanding of holistic assessment, and the wider determinants of health and capacity building. You will need to have excellent communication skills and some experience of working collaboratively with other agencies.

Specific entry requirements for Oxford Brookes University

Access to the SCPHN course is open to practitioners who meet the following criteria:

• This course is at level 7 (masters degree) therefore evidence is required of recent study at level 6 (degree level).

You must:

• be registered on either the nursing or midwife (parts one or two of the NMC register) prior to the course start date
• be able to demonstrate evidence of recent study at level 6 on entry

Please note that clinical placements are limited, we do try to match you to the most suitable base and take into consideration where you live and caring responsibilities.

Clinical placements are across West Sussex and Brighton & Hove.

New for Jan 2025:The taught component of the course is delivered virtually by Oxford Brookes University*. The is no requirement to attend Oxford Brookes University in person. The clinical placements require you to join a health visiting team and attend the office base as per the course time-table for a 7.5 hour day. You can expect to have two different placements whilst on the course.
