We are looking for an enthusiastic experienced paediatric dietitian, with excellent clinical and communication skills, to join our friendly and supportive team based at Milton Keynes University Hospital.

The successful candidate will work closely with the multi-disciplinary paediatric team providing specialist dietetic care to children both as inpatients and outpatients. The candidate is likely to cover general paediatric clinics, inpatient cover on the children's ward and a more specialist area (depending on experience).

An individual's previous experience and skill set will determine the specific caseload assigned.

The paediatric dietetic team consists of 6 dietitians and a dietetic assistant practitioner providing a service to a number of specialist areas including allergy, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, neonatal unit, and home enteral feeding. This is in addition to general paediatric clinics where infants and children are seen with a range of conditions including faltering growth, nutritional support, and cow's milk allergy.

Main duties of the job

You will bejoining our wider forward- thinking department of over 30 registered dietitians, dietetic support workers and admin staff,coveringacute, community, paediatric and learning disability services.We haveexcellent support staff andtake students forclinical placements.

To provide specialist paediatric service to children and young people, including inpatients and outpatients at MKUH

To work as part of the multidisciplinary paediatric team providing care for children and young people.

To contribute to the development of support and treatment pathways for children and young people receiving dietetic care across primary and secondary care.

To plan, co-ordinate and evaluate specialist areas of the the paediatric dietetic service.

Job responsibilities

Clinical
  • To demonstrate highly developed specialist knowledge and supplement this with extensive experience to advise patients / carers with complex needs, supervise and teach others, and to use this knowledge to provide other professionals with expert dietetic advice.
  • To provide nutritional and dietetic information, and clinical advice to children and young people (and their carers), working as part of the MDT

Responsibility for Resources
  • To evaluate service user information in line with current evidence and produce new information as required.
  • To provide and where necessary develop up-to-date resources for healthcare professionals to support nutritional management care plans.

Communication
  • Using high level skills based on extensive training to motivate, counsel and support service users, staff, and carers in behaviour change. This will require well-developed skills in negotiation, persuasion, tact, and diplomacy.
  • To discuss with other health professionals at all levels to promote the dietetics services, and to enhance patient care. This will include using electronic communication systems as well as more traditional methods of communication.

Professional Development
  • To recognise the need for continuous professional development. Within the PDR system and after discussion with the departmental manager you will be responsible for accessing and attending your own training for professional development, meeting Health and Care Professions Council standards for registration.
  • To ensure own clinical supervision needs are met.

Service Development
  • To plan, co-ordinate and evaluate specialist areas of the paediatric dietetic service.
  • To attend, be active and interactive in paediatric team meetings

Organisational/Administrative Responsibilities
  • To be aware of the importance of being up to date with IT policies and plans, using electronic communication and reporting methods wherever possible. This includes reporting activity in a timely manner.
  • To be responsible for maintaining patient records in line with department standards and Data Protection Act 2018 requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential

  • Registration in relevant profession with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Evidence of a range of specialist continuing professional development
  • Post graduate study in specialist area of paediatrics (Masters level or equivalent)
  • Awareness of NHS and Trust systems, policies, procedures and current changes
  • Sound therapeutic and clinical knowledge


Desirable

  • Member of relevant specialist interest group.
  • Specialist knowledge of managing children receiving home enteral feeds
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of national guidelines relevant to paediatric enteral feeding.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of evidence based clinical practice for paediatric home enteral feeding.


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience of assessment, interpretation, individual care planning, motivation, monitoring and evaluation of highly specialised treatment,
  • Up to date knowledge of all aspects of management of children and young people on special diets
  • Active member of multi-disciplinary team (MDT) including liaison with clinical specialists, GP, specialist nurses, community teams etc.
  • Ability to autonomously manage a caseload of highly complex patients


Desirable

  • Experience of working with children and young people receiving home enteral feeds
  • Ability to undertake projects within specialist area e.g. using NICE guidance, benchmarking and clinical audit
  • Ability to lead and participate in departmental audits and review of Trust Policy
  • Proven leadership experience in relevant clinical specialty or similar clinical field

  • Ability to remain flexible when organising and prioritising own clinical and non-clinical caseload
