The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Lead Nursing Teamin leading the nursing teams throughout the 24 hour period.

As an experienced nurse the jobholder will co-ordinate activities in the department ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified staff within ED. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the nursing team and ensuring effective management of the department in the absence of the Lead Nurse.

Will act at all times to encourage an environment of empowerment through coaching, teaching and facilitating to support service development.

Main duties of the job

The jobholder will work for the Emergency Department and may be asked to work cross site.

The jobholder will support the Lead Nurse in the day to day management of a team of nurses and support staff, co-ordinating the smooth running of the Emergency Department on a shift by shift basis.

With a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse the post holder will have responsibility for the On-going development of a team of nurses. This entails working with a wide range of Professionals including medical, nursing and management colleagues.

Undertake Emergency Nurse Practitioner role if training and competencies are achieved.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience at Band 5 or equivalent in Emergency Department or Acute setting
  • Proven leadership and management skills
  • Experience in change management
  • Insight into clinical speciality
  • Insight into current nursing and professional issues
  • Demonstrates standards of professional practice


Desirable

  • Involvement in staff / service development
  • Ability to demonstrate involvement in service development, e.g. patient pathways


Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse - Level 1
  • Recognised teaching / assessing qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development and implementation in clinical practice within the last 12 months
  • Application of evidence based practice


Desirable

  • Willingness to work towards ENP
  • Understanding of training needs in relation to post i.e ALS, PLS, ILS, Trauma course
  • To develop personal clinical ability to meet service demands
  • Evidence of RCN competencies completion
