This is a very exciting opportunity, to develop your specialist knowledge and skills in the care and management of older people with communication disorders and dysphagia in the community and in-patients, including those diagnosed with a dementia. You will be fully supported to complete your RCSLT competencies and progress to specialist dysphagia training.
You will be working alongside aband 7 SALT Clinical Lead, who has expertise in managing dysphagia in older people, and Band 6 specialist SALTs. You will also be part of our Older Persons Community therapy service, with excellent opportunities for multi-disciplinary working and professional development.
The successful applicant will have a passion for promoting the dignity and quality of life of older people, be well organised, and have some understanding of cognitive impairment and dementia. You will receive regular supervision, and professional development is positively encouraged.
Main duties of the job
To assess, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment.
To provide professional advice to others regarding the management and care of patients/clients with communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties.
To undertake joint assessments with other Speech and Language Therapists and/or other professionals within the specialist area of dementia.
To communicate condition related information from assessment to service users, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions.
To work closely with service users, carers and families, agreeing decision making relevant to the patient/client management.
To demonstrate empathy with service users, carers, families and colleagues, ensuring that effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.
To develop skills in motivating service users and/or carers to engage in the therapeutic process.
To manage a dementia caseload that consists of a broad range of presentations.
To use knowledge to inform sound clinical judgements/decision making for case management.
To promote a client centred approach that respects the service users needs and opinions and promotes his or her active participation in any intervention and the decision making process associated with it.
