An exciting opportunity has arisen for a clinically experienced midwife to join the MQAS team at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital

The role will be 80% clinical quality and safety and 20 % clinical.

You will need to be highly organised, flexible and motivated for this demanding role for which you will be fully supported by the team and receive the necessary training

Thesuccessful applicant will need to demonstrate:

  • An ability to work as part of a wider team but also demonstrate their autonomy in managing their day to day workload

Main duties of the job

The Maternity Quality and Safety Midwife (MQAS) is an experienced registered midwife who is passionate about improving the safety and effectiveness of the maternity service. They will be proactive in sharing the learning and themes from national reports and local incidents. They strive to develop practice, informing the training needs for the service and driving the highest standards of care.

This role will support the MQAS team in the implementation of the governance framework across the service through ensuring high quality internal reporting and communication across the Trust and to external partners.

The post holder will work with the MQAS team to identify, monitor and support risk issues within the department, and ensure the workforce take a proactive approach to mitigating risk and improving safety.

The role will include liaising with families, to ensure the service complies with the duty of candour responsibilities and ensure good communication throughout the investigation process. They will organise and support debrief meetings following serious incidents where appropriate.

Job responsibilities

Roles and responsibilities
  • Maintain a high profile in the clinical area and be accessible to all staff.
  • Develop and maintain communication channels, engaging all roles within the service and ensure regular updates are provided.
  • To provide professional and operational support to the Midwifery clinical and management team in relation to Claims, Complaints, Clinical Risk and Governance initiatives and issues.
  • Assist with the day to day maternity risk management process and strategy. Including the accurate reporting and validation of incidents onto the Datix electronic system and to ensure that the appropriate actions are taken in relation to any risks that are identified.
  • To be responsible for ensuring incidents from the service are reported as appropriate, via the Datix reporting system.
  • To co-ordinate, lead or delegate investigations and provide leadership and support for staff when serious incidents (SI) occur within maternity services.
  • Contribute to the notification, and investigation using the PMRT role.

Development, Planning and Organisation
  • To be aware of national initiatives and strategies and feed these into local maternity service development.
  • Ensure a current business continuity plan exists to support system failure and staff are fully aware of the plan.
  • Contribute towards the planning of services to meet organisational and national targets.
  • Ensure staff have the ability to maintain contemporaneous record in line with the Clinical Negligence scheme for Trusts (CNST) and professional standards.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Be an active member of the relevant Clinical Governance & Risk Committees as directed and set up support systems to ensure the committees receive robust information from the Division (maternity services).
  • To comply with all Trust policies, procedures and guidelines with regards to staff management issues.
  • To take personal responsibility for own professional and personal development, in line with the NMC, and participate in personal performance reviews.
  • To be highly visible and approachable to midwifery and obstetric staff, women and their families so that open and honest communication channels are created and effective assessments of care delivery and risk management can be undertaken.

Person Specification

Essential and Desirable

Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • First level degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
  • Up to date and evidence based knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
  • 5 years post registration experience
  • Teaching and assessing qualification/experience
  • Evidence of MDT working


Desirable

  • Post-graduate qualification and / or equivalent level of knowledge gained through extensive experience
  • Change management experience / skills
  • Service develpment experience, delivering clinical quality improvements and successful service change
  • Experience as a Labour ward Co-ordinator Band 7
  • Experience in all care settings
