Band 6 Occupational Therapist (30 hrs per week) Amblescroft North, Fountain Way, Salisbury

We are currently looking for an experienced, innovative Occupational Therapist in Wiltshire to join our friendly, supportive team. You will have the opportunity to develop and provide a therapeutic provision to Amblescroft North, an 18 bed functional older adult ward.

This post will involve being an active member of the multidisciplinary team, with an emphasis on developing meaningful person centred care plans and delivering these in the ward environment and community. You will have the opportunity to supervise our Band 3 support worker in her OT apprenticeship and have regular clinical support from the Occupational Therapy Lead.

There are exciting opportunities for service development within AWP. The OT team are currently developing the sensory provision on inpatient wards. Amblescroft North is one of 4 psychiatric specific wards in Fountain Way; located centrally in Salisbury. There are supportive links with the OT team across the site offering opportunities for networking, working across wards, CPD, regular supervision and training.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality Occupational Therapy service for older adults and be professionally accountable for a designated caseload
  • To work as a key member of the multidisciplinary team attending ward rounds, Care Programme Approach meetings, discharge meetings and providing timely feedback
  • To provide standardised and non-standardised specialist assessments and interventions, delivered 1:1 and in groups, to inform care needs assessments, promote independence and recovery
  • To delegate and supervise the work of junior colleagues within the service.
  • To support the service with the prioritisation, planning, development and delivery of a high quality occupational therapy service in accordance to Trust and OT goals

    Job description Job responsibilities

    Clinical PracticeTo carry out clinical practice within designated clinical areas ensuring that high quality evidence based occupational therapy assessment, treatment planning, interventions and evaluations for service users are provided. With the aim of enabling service users to achieve their maximum level of function and independence, this will include:-

    Undertaking a comprehensive person centred occupational therapyassessment and prepare treatment plans in consultation with the serviceusers.

    Implementation of treatment and rehabilitation programmes.

    Evaluation of the effectiveness of therapy provided in partnership withservice users.

    Ability to implement research based practice.

    Provide leadership to junior, unqualified staff and students.

    Ability to undertake risk assessment and develop risk management strategies for individual service users; CPA/SAP to people who present with mental health problems.

    Ability to undertake risk assessment and develop risk managementstrategies for groups and a variety of activities.

    Demonstrate a working knowledge of the key elements of relevant mentalhealth legislation.

    To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and providetraining and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations to the serviceusers social and physical environment.

    To assess the occupational needs of a defined service user group andestablish and evaluate appropriate treatment programmes.

    Education and Health Promotion

    To use own skills, knowledge and resources to provide learning opportunities for staff and promote positive attitudes towards mental health, this will include:-

    To be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of OTstudents on practice placement within the Trust.

    Support the provision of an appropriate learning environment for studentsnovice practitioners and new team members as directed.

    Continuing Professional Development Objective

    To maintain and develop professional knowledge skills and expertise to ensure that therapy reflects best practice remains evidence based, is current and responsive to meet changing service user and NHS needs to include:-

    Abide by the Code of Ethics and professional conduct for OccupationalTherapists and HCPC standards.

    To take responsibility for post registration education and for continuingprofessional development as outlined in HCPC standards.

    To receive clinical/professional supervision in accordance with Trustsupervision policy.

    To access management support from the posts line manager.

    Service Overview and PlanningTo contribute to the development and planning of services specific to the posts designated areas. This will include:-

    Contribute to the planning and development of clinical services, includingthe review of team establishments, grade mix and skill mix and to beactively involved in the recruitment, selection and interviewing process.

    To have a say in clinical policy development and clinical governancefunctions, working collaboratively.

    Finance and Workforce

    To play a role in making best use of available workforce and material resources and contributing to provision of best therapy possible. Follow Trust and Service Policies relating to the security of the building/clients, to ensure safe practice and protection of clients, staff, visitors and members of the general public, this will include:-

    Play a part in the service provision that is both safe and therapeutic withinspan of knowledge.

    Coordinate the day-to-day activities of junior staff and students whereapplicable.

    To be responsible for maintaining resources and delivering a service withinfinancial constraints.

    To provide people management function to identify staff for the designatedareas, including the development and implementation of regular appraisaland performance management systems. Maintain accurate records.

    Record Keeping and Administration

    To maintain high standards of record keeping and associated administration in accordance with AWP Trust Policy and local joint arrangements and professional guidelines, this will include:-

    The upkeep of contemporaneous, chronological and accurate mental healthrecords in accordance with relevant COT Guidelines and Trust Policy.

    To ensure timely recording of all data required by the Trust

    Practice Development and Clinical Audit

    To contribute to practice development activity and evidenced based mental health occupational therapy this will include:-

    To take part in Trust LDU audits as required.

    To broaden research and development skills through participation inlocal/trust/national audit and research projects.

    Communications and Working Relationships

    To form professional relationships with clients and communicate with them in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture.

    Person Specification Qualifications Essential
    • Possession of appropriate registration from the Health and Care Professions Council
    Experience Essential
    • Practical experience of providing high quality care and exceeding expectations with this complex and vulnerable group of people.
    • Experience of planning and leading 1:1 and group interventions
    Desirable
    • Working within the older adult environment.
    • An understanding of the complexities of organic verses functional illness.
    Knowledge Essential
    • Knowledge and understanding of a variety of cognitive and functional assessments.
    Desirable
    • Understanding and experience of the Allen Cognitive Level Screen Assessment
