Specialist Paediatric Occupational Therapist
This post is a rotational Paediatric role within the Paediatric Occupational therapy team. The rotational areas are pre-school, schools and secondary physical disability. The post holder will, provide Occupational Therapy to children in a variety of settings, including special schools, preschool, and mainstream environments. The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner providing a specialist Occupational Therapy service to a designated caseload of children with a range of sensory and physical disabilities, motor planning difficulties, eating and drinking difficulties and Special Educational Needs (SEN). A significant proportion of these children will have English as an additional language (EAL). He/she will be expected to manage their own caseload with minimal support from a senior therapist. This post will involve travelling between schools and the hospital working along side teaching staff to ensure appropriate therapy programmes are in place for the children under their care.
Main duties of the job
We have a strong professional structure with Clinical Lead (Band 8a) and Advanced Therapists (Band 7), each leading on different aspects of service delivery. There are also Band 6 & 5 Therapists and a Band 3 Technician. We have regular in house and external CPD opportunities and a strong supervision structure.
This post will involve working a mixture of clinics, mainstream schools and special schools. Our service is keen to focus on evidence based family-centred care principles, and applying best practice guidelines to enable occupational participation. We are open to new ideas and constantly reviewing and modifying the way we work.We are looking for team players who have a range of clinical experiences. Candidates will need to have good communication skills and any experience in working within an inter-disciplinary team and interagency collaboration will be an advantage. Job description Job responsibilities To communicate complex patient related information effectively ensuring collaborative working with multidisciplinary team members across health, education, social services and the voluntary sector. To work in particular with teaching staff, or medical/ nursing staff to ensure the delivery of a well coordinated care/individual education plans/programmes, facilitating the development of physical skills To share information with others, observing confidentiality and data protection guidelines and having due regard for local guidance on sharing information with colleagues in health, education, social services and the voluntary sector. To communicate complex condition related information (both verbally and in the written form) from assessment, to CYP, Parents/carers, and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions. This includes child specific information as well as training packages to parents, teachers and other professionals regarding physical disability/difficulties, sensory/perceptual and functional difficulties. To have due regard for the cultural and linguistic differences of children/families concerned. To work closely with CYP, carers and families, involving them in decision making, regarding intervention approaches, demonstrating empathy and ensuring that effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to understanding exist (i.e. communication difficulties, EAL and learning difficulties). This may involve the use of interpreters. To employ excellent communication skills such as persuasion, motivation and explanations to encourage/reassure CYP and carers to undertake treatment programmes. To demonstrate negotiation skills in the management of conflict across a range of situations. To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible and report to senior staff as appropriate. To form productive relationships with others in particular parents/carers who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication difficulties. To provide specialist clinical reports as per departmental standards, including reports for Annual review meetings for statemented CYP. To provide written advice for education and health care plans, describing the impact of the childs difficulties will have on their learning environment.

- Evidence of Completion of specialist short courses relevant to children with special needs/ disability i.e. splinting, neurology, seating
- Member of the CYPF RCOT specialist section
