Due to the expansion of the maternity vaccination programmes, our highly successful maternity immunisation team are looking to employ an enthusiastic and experienced nurse to join the team. We offer an excellent training package relevant to the role which will be provided, and you will be actively supported in continuing professional development.

We need staff who are motivated, flexible, positive and passionate about immunisations, and feel confident promoting these to the pregnant people who use maternity services. They will support the maternity immunisation lead nurse to develop, monitor and promote the immunisation services available.

The post holder will work within the maternity immunisation team, alongside the antenatal and newborn screening team, to deliver the maternity immunisation programmes, including the pertussis, seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccinations, as well as the BCG vaccination to eligible babies.

The post holder will be proactive in the collation and reporting of Key Performance Indictors (KPIs) related to the immunisation programmes.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will work within the Maternity Immunisation Team, alongside the Antenatal and Newborn screening team, to deliver the maternity vaccination programmes including influenza (seasonal), pertussis and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccinations.
  • To administer the BCG vaccination to eligible babies born at Northampton General Hospital.
  • To work alongside the Clinical teams to provide the highest quality care required to support each woman in their care pathway, whilst improving maternity experience, maintaining clinical credibility and disseminating knowledge.
  • To provide a high-quality immunisation provision to the pregnant population cared for by NGH Maternity services.
  • To be proactive in the delivery of the maternal vaccination programmes and the delivery of Key Performance Indicators relating to these.
  • To manage the resources and coordination of the booking process for the programmes.
  • To maintain databases relating to the uptake of vaccinations

Job responsibilities

Practice

To assess, implement and evaluate the influenza, pertussis, BCG and RSV vaccination programmes in line with the service specification.

Care for those women in line with current evidence, vaccination policies and guidelines and NMC Code of Practice.

In conjunction with the screening team develop an environment which supports the value of the vaccination programme for pregnant women.

To liaise and communicate with other members of the midwifery and multi-disciplinary team in the planning and delivery of the programme.

To act as an advocate for those women in the care pathway.

To ensure that vaccines are stored and used in accordance with the organisational policies and guidance.

To promote health education for pregnant people and their family at all times. To undertake opportunistic approach to delivering the programmes as necessary.

Complete and maintain electronic and any written records as required.

To provide support for Midwifery members of staff and colleagues, regarding the programmes.

Education

The practitioner has a responsibility for their own professional updating to maintain their personal clinical expertise.

To maintain personal clinical expertise through clinical practice and within NMC requirements under PREP and CPD.

To have a proactive approach to self-development and be professionally accountable for your actions and omissions.

To participate in the appraisal and revalidation process with their line manager.

Research and Audit

The practitioner is expected to contribute to the development of professional practice within the service unit by ensuring that practice is current and dynamic responding to clinical evidence as it develops.

To foster an environment where practice/research is evidence-based and to participate in audit as required ensuring that the service is effective.

To participate in research within the department as appropriate.

To participate in clinical audit within the department as appropriate.

Leadership

To assist in the monitoring, development and review of quality measures and performance indicators in relation to immunisations

To ensure effective and efficient use of the resources required for the service and report any concerns to their line manager.

To deliver the best possible maternity care and ensuring care is high quality and evidence-based care.

To take responsibility for the organisation of the day-to-day management of the programme and deliver care as appropriate to the programme.

To ensure the promotion of safety of patients, staff and visitors to the work area.

To be aware of resource issues in the use and maintenance of the equipment and area resources.

To manage the resources and coordination of the booking process for the programmes.

To identify and report areas of need as required.

To be responsible for the safe and effective maintenance of equipment within the area of responsibility.

To liaise with line managers, where appropriate, to minimise or reduce expenditure of all resources.

Operational

To ensure that communication links within the department, wider Trust and other organisations are of a high standard.

To maintain own departmental activity within current Health and Safety legislation.

To maintain the safety and upkeep of the area environment.

To participate in the Risk Management strategy of the department and the Trust.

To assist in the collection of data for statistical and administrative purposes.

To undertake clinical audit in relation to the programme.

To be proactive in the promotion of immunisation agenda.

Service development / improvement:

To train and educate Midwives in the immunisation public health agenda.

Person Specification

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • Relevant Degree or evidence of further study and experience to the equivalent


Desirable

  • Evidence of further study at post registration level.
  • Mentorship and sign off mentor
  • Immunisation experience


Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Awareness of local and national agendas
  • Awareness of the public health agenda around immunisations in pregnancy and the BCG programme
  • Minimum of 1 years post qualification experience


Desirable

  • Knowledge of risk and clinical governance
  • Experience in clinical audit
