We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and innovative Clinical Psychologist to join the Psychological and Mental Health Services (PAMHS) at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

This post will involve working with children and families who access the hospital under the care of the Dermatology and Rheumatology teams on an inpatient and outpatient basis. This post will provide psychological assessment and interventions to children with a range of dermatological and rheumatological conditions and their families, working closely with specialist paediatric consultants and allied health professionals.

You will be working with the Specialist Health Conditions Stream (a team of paediatric clinical psychologists) who offer psychological input to children under the care of six medical specialties: dermatology, rheumatology, endocrinology, urology, gastroenterology and neurology. In addition to your work with the dermatology team you will contribute to the flexible delivery of psychology services across the stream, in response to new developments and organisational changes.

We are looking for someone who is confident in working within physical health and/or work with children and young people and who is keen to further develop clinical skills in this area. Experience and interest in delivery of psychological interventions in groups would be welcomed, as would an interest in working with young people with procedural distress.

Main duties of the job

We are one of three paediatric psychology streams within the hospital and sit within the wider psychological and mental health services (PAMHS). It is an exciting time to join PAMHS after the recent launch of the PAMHS strategy and as we settle in to our new clinical and office space.

As a psychology team we draw on a range of therapeutic modalities including Narrative therapy, CBT, Systemic, ACT, Compassion focussed therapy, attachment and mentalisation based approaches. There are opportunities to work in creative formulation driven ways with young people and families and you will have the opportunity to offer individual, family, parent and group psychological intervention as part of this role as well as the opportunities to work with external agencies and within GOSH MDT's.

There is a strong commitment to, and opportunities for, continuing professional development and different ways of working, in line with job planning. A range of academic teaching is offered within the department as well as special interest groups in medicalised trauma, medically unexplained symptoms, narrative therapy, cognitive assessment, and others. Utilisation of research skills for audit, policy and service development and research is encouraged.

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Good honours degree in Psychology.
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS/HCPC, including clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council as Practitioner Psychologist


Desirable

  • Post-doctoral training and recorded CPD experience and /or further qualifications in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice


Skills and abilities

Essential

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management.
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their carers, and other professionals.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to distressing situations and challenging behaviours.
  • Evidence of skilled and productive multidisciplinary team working
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, including verbal abuse.
  • Ability to administer, score and interpret a range of cognitive assessment tools


Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts and of working in a multicultural framework
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to children and young people and child protection.
  • Experience in delivering evidence based interventions for a range of child and adolescent mental health problems


Desirable

  • Experience of teaching or training.
  • Experience and expertise in working with children who have life limiting and life threatening conditions, including experience of bereavement work
  • Experience of presenting psychology to multidisciplinary audiences at conferences or other educational settings.
  • Experience of providing psychological input in a medical setting
