The post offered is that of Consultant in Substance Misuse Psychiatry covering theLondon Borough of Haringey. This 8PA substantive position has arisen as a result of the current incumbent needing to relocate abroad. The post currently sits within the Specialist Services Division and there is an expectation of contribution to Division governance and management processes as a senior clinical leader.

Job responsibilities

This Consultant Psychiatrist post covers the London borough of Haringey and operates from the Grove Drug Treatment Service. There is a sister service in Enfield, as well as Dual Diagnosis Teams in each borough. All teams work to the evidence-based model set out in NICE guidance and UK Guidance on Drug misuse and dependence (2017).

Principal duties will include senior clinical leadership to The Grove and responsibility for the medical care of clients under the care of the team.

The Grove is a multidisciplinary team delivering a community service to adults seeking help with difficulties around substance misuse. The service works in a wider partnership with Humankind (a third sector provider) and BUBIC (a peer support and community engagement group). Humankind also delivers alcohol treatment in the borough through Haringey Advisory Group on Alcohol (HAGA).

As of May 2024, The Grove has a caseload of 768 opiate dependent clients prescribed opiate replacement therapy. There are approximately 286 non-opiate clients. The service receives around 20 new referrals per month. Most are self-referral. New referrals are screened by non-medical team members and, if accepted, offered a medical assessment. A half day outpatient clinic has an average of one patient appointment, maximum two.

Potential for Additional Programmed Activities:

On top of the 8PAs for this role, the current postholder works an additional 2 PAs in his role as RC for the Haringey Homeless Health Inclusion Team. There is potential to increase designated SPA sessions in negotiation with the Haringey Mental Health Clinical Director dependent on the development needs of the successful candidate. Team meetings are held on Wednesdays at 1130 to 1230, and clients are seen at Mulberry junction at 1200-1400hrs on a Friday.

Liaison with Trust services and relevant non-statutory organisations:

o Close working with partner organizations delivering substance and alcohol treatment. These include Humankind, HAGA, BUBIC, Insight Platform and Recovery Services.

o Regular liaison with the relevant acute inpatient wards, community Mental Health Teams, Hepatitis services, Home Treatment Teams, Dual Diagnosis Network, Emergency Department psychiatry liaison teams, perinatal teams and forensic services.

o Maintaining good relations with General Practitioners and other stakeholders, e.g. social Services.

o Ensure close relations with key stakeholder in drug treatment, such as probation, prisons, local authority and public health.

Education and Training:

o Supervision of Core Trainee, Higher Trainee and Specialty doctor.

o Participate in the teaching and training of other disciplines.

o A full role in the wider academic activities of the service, eg attendance and participation in academic meetings, journal clubs etc.

Clinical Governance

o A lead role for the service in terms of audit and other procedures to ensure good clinical governance. Reporting to the division is via an integrated governance meeting.

Service development:

o Lead role in the assessment and development of services in partnership with other stakeholders. This also included developing new business and service models.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
• Listed on the Specialist Register of the GMC Medical Register or eligible to register within six months.
• Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrist or equivalent qualifications/ certification
• Approval under Section 12 (2) of the 1983 Mental Health Act, the 2007 amendments and any successor legislation
• Approved Clinician status in terms of the same legislation
• Training and experience in evidence based interventions for substance misuse to include: Psychoeducation, medication and Psychological Therapies
• Membership of a professional indemnity organization.
• Engagement with annual appraisal.
• Experience of Safeguarding Children Framework.
• Experience in multi - disciplinary teaching.
• Ability to take a leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high quality care and staff morale.
• Participation in Medical Audit
• Capacity to respond positively to the constantly changing NHS environment
