This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a wonderful team of Oncology Physiotherapists at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as a Band 7 Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist. We are looking for an experienced Physiotherapist who is passionate about the delivery of high quality services and optimising care. Your primary base will be our inpatient hospital based in Liverpool City Centre, however there may be times when you are asked to work over at our Wirral and Aintree sites.

This post is a Fixed Term Position covering maternity leave until November 2025.

We would also consider applications for an external secondment, subject to prior approval from the applicant's line manager.

Currently the Physiotherapy service covers Monday to Friday 8.00 - 16.30 with on call cover Saturday and Sunday 08.00 - 16.30 on a rota basis. Our on call service covers ward based respiratory patients at CCC Liverpool only. (We do not have ventilated patients or NIV/CPAP).

Main duties of the job

As the clinical specialist physiotherapist you will provide clinical leadership in the field of oncology, assessing and treating a caseload of low to highly complex oncology patients and supporting junior staff members in treating this group of patients. You will support the Physiotherapy Team Leader to develop the Physiotherapy service to meet the needs of oncology patients.

The majority of your role will be supporting our Haemato-Oncology and Solid Tumour patients to live well, with and beyond Cancer. You will have a varied and diverse caseload including rehabilitation, respiratory, neurology, metastatic spinal cord compression management, scar tissue management and elements of palliative and supportive care.

We promote close MDT working allowing a holistic approach to patient care.

You will lead in the development of our specialist services, supervision of junior staff and student education

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience in clinical areas relevant to this post such as Respiratory, Neurology, Surgical/Medical
  • Relevant and recent experience in oncology
  • Significant post registration experience in a physiotherapy position at a senior level
  • Evidence of leadership and service development
  • Experience working with a multi disciplinary team
  • Experience in supervision / mentoring of junior staff, assistants and students
  • Clinical experience in the assessment and rehabilitation of patients with functional and physical impairment due to disease progression
  • In-depth experience in the physiotherapy management of patients with multiple and complex presentation
  • Experience of working with individuals with a life limiting illness
  • Evidence of involvement in audit and Research
  • Experience of involvement in emergency on-call rota


Desirable

  • Experience in Haemato-Oncology, Medical and Clinical oncology
  • Physiotherapy assessment and management of MSCC patients
  • Involvement in developing professional practice, and transforming service delivery
  • Experience in writing policies, protocols and developing new areas of working
  • Experience of presenting at study events or delivering education


Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Specilist knowledge and expertise in the core physiotherapy pillars of practice
  • Awareness of current evidence and drivers in cancer care and its application to physiotherapy and application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the impact of cancer and its treatment and its impact on function, physicality, general Health and Well Being and Quality of Life
  • Specialist knowledge across a range of physioherapy assessments and interventions acquired through degree and post graduate experience
  • Understanding of audit and its role in clinical practice/service development
  • Knowledge of policies, procedure and guidelines relevant to this role
  • Understanding of NHS structure & systems
  • Ability to work autonomously within Oncology field & undertake clinical analysis and reasoning skills in the assessment and treatment of patients and apply broad standards & guidelines to own practice

  • Knowledge of the side effects of cancer treatments


Qualifications

Essential

  • Physiotherapy BSc or MSc
  • Registration with Health and Care Professions Council
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Postgraduate study
  • Placement educator course


Desirable

  • Leadership training
  • Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Recognised Postgraduate qualification in Oncology /or Palliative care
  • Advanced communication course
  • Coaching/Mentoring/Clinical Supervision Training
