We have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic HCPC state registered Advanced Biomedical Scientist to join our Blood Transfusion Department. B6 candidates with suitable experience and working towards a postgraduate qualification (FIBMS, MSc) will be considered and if successful will be appointed on an Annex U training post.

With a passion for Blood Transfusion you will be an experienced Biomedical Scientist who will join our team at an exciting time of change and modernisation. We are implementing exciting developments in how we deliver our patient care and you will play an essential role in shaping the future of our transfusion service.

There will be a requirement to work at any of the 3 University Hospitals of Leicester sites over a 24/7 period.

The Blood Transfusion department has an active CPD scheme and encourages life-long learning with emphasis on strong, personal and professional development.

Main duties of the job

Working under the leadership of a Deputy Service Manager, the Advanced Biomedical Scientist role is critical to the successful operations of the service.

As an Advanced Biomedical Scientist, you will be required to apply and disseminate your highly specialist Blood Transfusion knowledge and practical experience, ensuring the smooth day to day running of the department.

You will be expected to assist in the delivery of a quality service by working closely with the Quality Management Team and contribute to the on-going development of the department with the Deputy Service Manager.

The post holder will be expected to assist with the management of a team and to provide expert scientific, technical and clinical knowledge to aid diagnostic interpretation of Blood Transfusion tests.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Perform highly complex examinations of clinical specimens in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, including interpretation of results, in an efficient, effective and safe manner.
  • Provide expert advice and interpretation of laboratory investigations to healthcare professionals as required or for referral to specialist medical and scientific for clincal advice
  • Monitor internal and external quality control results, taking appropriate action to identify and correct problems. To report problems to more senior staff as appropriate.
  • Continually review performance against KPIs, proactively addressing areas of concern.
  • Contribute to the future planning and organisation of the service by reporting issues, problems and trends to senior management.
  • Be able to work independently and manage own workload working to local and national standards within the HCPC profesional code of conduct.


Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential

  • State Registered BMS (HCPC) Has completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent
  • MSc. or equivalent Postgraduate qualification e.g. FIBMS
  • Can demonstrate highly specialised or expert knowledge in chosen field e.g. by attendance at Scientific symposia or short courses
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education and training.


Desirable

  • IBMS membership
  • Research, development or audit qualifications / experience
  • Other relevant qualifications or knowledge gained through short courses, e.g. scientific symposia, internal (Trust based) training


Experience

Essential

  • Must have up to date knowledge of the technical processes used within the discipline
  • Ability to demonstrate team-building and leadership skills
  • Significant post registration experience with demonstration of skill at specialist level


Desirable

  • Demonstrates knowledge of advanced techniques or instrumentation
  • An awareness of NHS financial and administrative systems


Communication and relationship

Essential

  • Ability to present complex scientific information to colleagues and externally when required.
  • Can communicate on a number of levels using different media.

  • Demonstrates range of IT Skills


Analytical and Judgement skill

Essential

  • Judgements involving a range of complex facts or situations, which require analysis, and interpretation of a range of options. E.g. actions to be taken in case of technical failures, decisions regarding appropriate methodology, prioritisation of complex work, handling of complaints.


Planning and Organisation Skill

Essential

  • Able to carry out staff planning
