We have an exciting opportunity available at the Luton & Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Trust for Band 5 Registered Nurses to join our committed team in SSSU.

We are seeking applications from registered nurses who have the ability and determination to learn and to gain new skills and competencies. They must be motivated to develop the highest standards of care and are committed to continuous improvement.

We are an innovative and busy Day Surgery Unit, covering same day operations for patients undergoing a number of specialities including, General Surgery, Breast, Gynaecology, Colorectal, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Urology, Maxillo- Facial, ENT, Plastics and Vascular.

This is an exciting time to join the Surgical Short Stay unit as we prepare to move the majority of our patient admissions and discharges to a new unit as part of the expansion and development of the Trust.

We currently provide a service from Monday to Friday, 7am-10pm, with a Super Saturday clinic on the second weekend of every month. The shift patterns for our qualified nurses are a mixture of Early shifts (7am - 5pm) and Late shifts (12pm - 10pm). These shift patterns are worked over 4 days in the week, including the Super Saturday when applicable.

Job responsibilities

Admit day surgery and inpatients completing a comprehensive assessment.

Demonstrate the ability to provide safe, quality care to post-operative patients undergoing various surgical procedures.

Safely discharge patients ensure they meet all day surgery criteria- nurse led. Ensuring patients have a clear understanding

Be able to manage symptom control post-surgery including post-operative pain and nausea

Demonstrate and apply clinical decision-making skills to all clinical specialties Liaise with specialist teams to create and organise post-operative care and provide continuing care to patient's post-surgery.

Be IV competent ,venepuncture and cannulation competent.

Be able to monitor catheters and when to raise concerns regarding fluid input and output.

To be able to perform a bladder scan, ECG's, Vital observations

Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to ensure that all information is disseminated accurately to patients, relatives, members of the multi-disciplinary team and other departments.

Maintain patient dignity and respect, and equality and diversity as per Trust Policies.

Act as a mentor to junior staff and create a positive learning culture by supporting skill acquisition and competency development.

Provide teaching to all students and new staff as part of an ongoing development programme.

Participate in local audits.

Act up as the daily coordinator in the absence of the Ward Manager if required.
  • To carry out all relevant forms of care under supervision and when proficient, demonstrate agreed clinical related duties supervise junior registered, support staff and a variety of students while maintaining a safe working environment


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse working in the UK
  • Degree or equivalent in Nursing
  • Mentorship course- MSPP/Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor course and updates


Experience

Essential

  • Experience as a Band 5 working in a Day Surgery, Surgical or Recovery environment
  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
  • Evidence id further education and training and on-going learning
  • Experience working with and supporting students and less experienced staff


Desirable

  • Good level of clinical skills including phlebotomy, cannulation, taking ECG's, medication administration


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of Day Surgery principles and Perioperative practice
  • Awareness of and demonstrates Trust values and acceptable standards of behaviour
  • Demonstrates awareness of current changes in the NHD- in particular in relation to Nursing
  • Ability to interpret and adhere to department and Trust policies, protocols, procedures and guidelines


Desirable

  • Knowledge of principles of clinical effectiveness, research and audit
