The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (ROH NHS FT) is the largest provider of elective orthopaedic surgery in the UK and provides routine and specialist orthopaedic services. It is also the leading specialist centre for bone and soft tissue cancers and provides a regional spinal service.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and dynamic senior pharmacy team at ROH NHS FT. The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of a high quality and clinically robust service to wards and other clinical areas, with a focus on achieving clinical excellence. The post holder will help develop and deliver new and innovative clinical services.

The pharmacy service has undergone a major service transformation with the relocation of the department to a newly refurbished space including a brand new Omnicell robot, trustwide EPMA and automation across all inpatient wards. This is a great time to join a forward-thinking senior pharmacy management team and make a difference in shaping the service for the future. The successful candidate will leadimprovements through service evaluation and representation at various Trust forums to drive the service forward. Moreover, you will mentor and provide line management to a growing number of Foundation pharmacists and clinical pharmacists.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will help develop the pharmacy service in line with the aspirations of the Pharmacy Department, the Division and the Trust.

As a highly specialist clinical pharmacist the post holder will be responsible for:
  • To lead and deliver the day-to-day clinical pharmacy service to surgical wards through a team approach across the service. To develop a comprehensive set of Clinical Pharmacy KPI's to provide assurance on the quality and effectiveness of the clinical pharmacy service within pharmacy and to the wider trust.
  • Developing, co-ordinating and participating in the post qualification training of pharmacists in liaison with the Lead Pharmacist-Education and Training. Including developing a departmental strategy towards advanced pharmacist practice.
  • To help develop a culture of excellence through exemplar leadership, supervision and mentoring to Foundation Year Pharmacists, Band 6/7 Clinical Pharmacists and medicines management technicians.
  • To support the Chief and Deputy Chief Pharmacists in the development and implementation of the Trust's Medicines policies, systems and processes through appropriate representation at various internal and external forums.
  • To support the Medication Safety Officer and Medication Safety Lead Pharmacist in addressing the safety agenda in relation to medicines across the Trust and hence minimising risk to patients.
  • Providing supervision to pharmacist prescribers, trainee prescribers and acting as DPP where appropriate.

    Job responsibilities

  • To lead and deliver the day-to-day clinical pharmacy service to surgical wards through a team approach across the service. To develop a comprehensive set of Clinical Pharmacy KPIs to provide assurance on the quality and effectiveness of the clinical pharmacy service within pharmacy and to the wider trust.
  • To support the Chief and Deputy Chief pharmacists in the development and implementation of the Trusts Medicines policies, systems and processes.
  • To lead on clinical service development and providing support to the wider trust initiatives regarding medicines as well as working with other colleagues such as the MSO, antimicrobial pharmacist and education lead pharmacist.
  • To act as a senior leader within the pharmacy department, deputising for the Chief/Deputy Chief pharmacist as required
  • To provide leadership and supervision and mentoring to Foundation Pharmacists and Band 6/7 Clinical Pharmacists
  • To act as a line manager and educational supervisor
  • Undertaking research, audits and development activities in Medicines Optimisation, Prescribing and Pharmacy practice, to help ensure continual progression of services and ensure that Nationally agreed targets are reached.

  • The post holder will be involved in supporting multiple projects/workstreams such as:
    • Pre-op assessment and day case surgery projects
    • Pain management
    • Preparing for CQC inspections/ engagement

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • Registered Pharmacist with the GPHC
    • Successfully completed the PG Pharmacy Clinical Diploma or equivalent experience
    • Independent Prescribing Qualification (Or working towards)


    Experience

    Essential

    • Significant experience working in an acute NHS Trust


    Desirable

    • Experience in postgraduate teaching and training


    Knowledge

    Essential

    • Clinical experience and knowledge gained in a range of specialities
    • Experience in multi-disciplinary working


    Desirable

    • Demonstrate competence at a senior clinical level
    • leadership /line management experience
