We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Band 6 Occupational Therapist to work in the Acute Adult Inpatient Unit at Chorley, Hospital delivering care to service users who are experiencing mental health problems. The successful candidate will be responsible for caseloads, assessing patients within the hospital and home environments and supporting with patient centered care and timely discharges to home or the most appropriate placement.

You will have the opportunity to further develop and enhance your skills and will be expected to provide professional supervision for our Band 5, Band 4 and Band 3 Occupational Therapy staff. You will receive regular professional supervision from a Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist and you will be supported and encouraged with your own professional development. We are looking for an enthusiastic OT who is keen to work with adults in mental health and to develop their clinical skills in this exciting area.

Working pattern (hours):Full time

Hours / sessions per week: 37.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

  • Assess and actively manage individual, activity, and environmental risk to ensure the safety of the service user, colleagues, self and the wider public.
  • Recognise the personal right of the service user to positive risk taking in promoting their own recovery.
  • Where identified as appropriate, to conduct comprehensive home assessments taking into account physical ability, mental capacity and safety issues, and to make recommendations for the provision of equipment, accessories, adaptations and re housing issues on the basis of these assessments.
  • To be responsible for ordering, fitting and checking of adaptive equipment as required, ensuring that the equipment is appropriate and can be used safely by clients and their carers.
  • When required as part of service user recovery, to work as a lone practitioner in a variety of settings where there is a requirement to make immediate decisions and work within remit of Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust policies and guidelines regarding Lone Worker practice.
  • Along with all staff, take reasonable care for the health and safety of self and others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work, observing local rules, policies, procedures, and regulations relating to keeping a safe workplace.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma/BSC (Hons) in Occupational Therapy (OT) or equivalent
  • State registered with Health Professionals Council
  • Documented evidence of continuing professional development (CPO)


Knowledge

Essential

  • Demonstrable knowledge of current best practice in older adult inpatient mental health and awareness of relevant government directives and legislation
  • Specialist knowledge and application of OT assessments and interventions using expert level clinical reasoning
  • Evidence of detailed knowledge of relevant legislation and its impact on current practice.
  • Demonstrable detailed knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and its application


Experience

Essential

  • 1 year post registration experience
  • Evidence of familiarity with audit processes
  • Extensive clinical experiences including individual and group work in mental health specialties


Desirable

  • Experience of a range of specialist Health and Social Care settings.


Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of ability to work autonomously and set own and others priorities
  • Familiarity with outcome measurement and analysis of outcomes.
  • Evidence of ability to organise/co-ordinate and respond efficiently to complex information.
  • Excellent Written and Oral Communication skills
  • Understanding of the different diagnoses of dementia, the impact on occupational performance and the use of occupational therapy assessment and intervention to support continuing independence and to promote the ability to live well with dementia.
  • Ability to devise specialist interventions to address occupational dysfunction to improve occupational Performance in older adults
  • Supervisor and appraisal skills - Ability to reflect and critically appraise own and others performance
