What is it like to be a Mental Health Nurse in a community setting at MPFT? - YouTube

The Integrated Co-occurring Needs Pathway (ICoN) is a partnership between mental health and substance use treatment providers across South Staffordshire (MPFT and Staffordshire County Council). Since going live at the beginning of 2023, ICoN has gained national recognition and was cited by Dame Carol Black as a case study for collaborative working in her First Annual Report following publication of the governments drug strategy.

As well as providing intensive biopsychosocial interventions, including specialist psychological therapies to individuals with complex, co-occurring needs (i.e. mental health, substance use, housing, offending, physical health etc.), ICoNs ultimate aim is to enhance existing service provision and strengthen integrated working to prevent individuals from falling in the gap that has traditionally existed between mental health and substance use services. Driven by passion, creativity and psychological formulation, ICoN encourages an inclusive, holistic and strengths-based way to approach co-occurring needs and nurture multi-agency relationships to promote a clients recovery.

As well as holding the service user at the heart of what they do, ICoN genuinely values staff wellbeing and appreciation and encourages innovation and creativity to support the development of not only the immediate team and exciting partnership pathway, but also the regional and national changes that ICoN could influence and lead to. The professional development opportunities that have already been supported include training in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Intensive Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). ICoN is also keen to develop opportunities for research and publication to promote wider systemic development and for teaching and training to support the national development of the psychology workforce in addictions and co-occurring needs.
