We are seeking to recruit a passionate and knowledgeable Family and Systemic Psychotherapist to join our Specialist Sussex-Wide Family Eating Disorder Service (SFEDS). SFEDS works with young people aged 10-18 with Anorexia Nervosa/Bulimia Nervosa and Atypical Anorexia Nervosa and their families, and supports recovery through Evidence Based Interventions such as Maudsley Family Therapy models, group work, and CBT-E. We pride ourselves on delivering high quality evidenced based treatment in accordance with NICE Guidelines and National Access and Waiting Time Standards.You will be joining a service of highly skilled and experienced Family and Systemic Psychotherapists, Psychiatry, Paediatrician, Clinical Psychology and Assistant Psychologists, Nurses, Support Workers, Dietitian, and Social Workers with support from an outstanding admin team. SFEDS covers all of Sussex, operating as a hub and spoke model with Crawley Down as the main team hub.

Main duties of the job

You will have the opportunity both for direct clinical work and groups with young people and families, MDT meetings, systemic case consultations as well as supervising band 7 Eating Disorder Therapists. You will be responsible for the timely allocation of young people who have been assessed as requiring NICE Concordant evidence based treatment for eating disorders.

You will be a central part of the leadership team and support ongoing service development and design. You will also provide training to staff in our service and with other stakeholders.

New starters will be offered training appropriate for the role.

Job description Job responsibilities

To be a successful Family and Systemic Psychotherapist in our team you will be:
  • Registered with UKCP
  • Skilled in specialised systemic assessment, and comfortable in providing highly specialised therapy for patients with an eating disorder and their families
  • Able to provide specialist advice and consultation to CAMHS colleagues, external agencies, working autonomously within professional guidelines
  • Able to support systemic and family practice within the service, providing effective leadership and management as well as staff supervision, consultation and training

You must be able to demonstrate a caring, compassionate and non-judgmental attitude, and show a commitment to making a difference when supporting young people and their families on their recovery journeys

MAIN DUTIES
  • To provide effective leadership and management to staff which promotes high performance standards both individually and as a team, in the achievement of the Trusts objectives and priorities.
  • To undertake and/or participate in relevant clinical research, service evaluation and audit.
  • To provide clinical supervision to eating disorder therapists, the duty team and/or the home intervention team in ways which fit with the individuals stage of professional development and are in accordance with Trust Clinical Governance standards and standards prescribed by AFT and UKCP.
  • To act as a specialist systematic psychotherapy resource by provision of systemic supervision, consultation and training within CAMHS in line with the requirements of service development.

Clinical
  • To provide a highly specialist assessment of referrals for clients with an eating disorder of significant and complex nature in order to formulate and implement plans for the treatment and management of a child or adolescents mental health needs based upon an appropriate conceptual framework and the best available evidence.
  • To provide systemic psychotherapy with clinical autonomy drawing on a range of models and wherever possible brief interventions. To practice in a way which is inclusive and considerate of the needs of each individual in the system including family members and their varying developmental stages and current emotional and mental state.
  • To work in ways which are sensitive to the needs of families from a wide range of racial, cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the young person and their difficulties.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management relevant to individual patients including protective and risk factors present in the network of significant relationships.
  • To work jointly and collaboratively with other members of the CYP-FEDS in order to enhance and develop work with families by providing specialist systemic knowledge and skills.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Post graduate qualification in relevant mental health/social welfare profession and demonstrable practice over a minimum of five years.
  • Masters/Doctoral level qualification in Systemic Psychotherapy.
  • Clinical Supervision training.
  • Maintaining of UKCP Registration including short or long term training to meet CPD requirements.
  • Training in teaching systemic psychotherapy.
  • Experience of working with young people with an eating disorder
  • Evidence of recent and relevant continuous professional development.
Experience/Knowledge/Skills Essential
  • Minimum four years' experience of working with children and adolescents and families in a CAMHS multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of groups across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience of assessing working with and intervening in complex professional networks surrounding the identified client.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for systemic care and treatment, with a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of risk assessment and risk management.
  • Specialist expertise in particular areas e.g. eating disorders, child protection issues, attachment difficulties
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of systemic assessment and treatment of individuals, couples, family systems and groups, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
  • Knowledge of skill in using a wide variety of systemic theories and interventions and the ability to use these appropriately in relation to client need and work setting.
  • Skills in professional supervision to meet UKCP requirements; skills for offering supervision of both trainee systemic psychotherapists and multi-disciplinary colleagues.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups. Evidence of CPPD as recommended by the AFT
  • Sufficient knowledge of other modalities to engage appropriately with colleagues and their work with clients
  • Ability to multi-task while leading and supervising a systemic psychotherapy workshop requiring intense concentration and skills for using a one-way screen, video equipment and involving members from different professional background in service deliver simultaneously.
  • Masters or Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology consistent with systemic practice
  • Well-developed skills to communicate effectively, oral and in writing at an age appropriate level (including us of play, drawing, role play, metaphor and stories) complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to children, adolescents, their families, carers and professionals within and outside the NHS including reports for the Courts
  • Knowledge of child development/mental health issues. Ability to work with a racially and culturally diverse community in a wide variety of contexts including highly specialist skills for working therapeutically in family homes.
  • Highly developed skills in live supervision of both systemic psychotherapists and multi-disciplinary colleagues.
