Working in private maternity maintains NHS length of service and pension contributions, as you are employed by the Trust.

Main duties of the job

This midwife will be part of the team that is responsible for a defined cohort of low-risk women who have chosen private midwifery-led care providing continuity throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods.

This will include facilitating antenatal clinics, antenatal education and community postnatal visits where appropriate.

This midwife will also work closely with the obstetric consultants on Kensington Wing (Private Maternity Unit) not only as link consultants to the midwifery-led care team but to deliver a high standard of midwifery care to their patients. It is recognised that these women have chosen private consultant-led obstetric care.

Professional

• Maintain and develop up-to-date evidence based professional knowledge and competence in accordance with NMC legislation and recommendations. Promote and role model positive professional behaviour.
• To abide by the NMC Midwives Rules and Standards (2012). As a Registered Midwife, you are personally accountable for development of your practice.
• Maintain and develop high standards of research-based midwifery care.
• Implement Trust policies and protocols utilising significant discretion to work within a set of defined parameters and ensure that all care is carried out within the agreed standard and policy. Participate in up-dating and revising of policies and guidelines as appropriate.
• Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with hospital and community midwifery based staff as well as other professional groups. Liaise effectively with the Professional Midwifery Advocates and demonstrate an understanding of the role of their role.

Clinical

• Act as an autonomous practitioner in all areas of normal midwifery practice as guided by the Midwives Rules and Standards (2012). This role encompasses the care given during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period.
• The post holder is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the total care to women/mothers and babies over a 24 hour period.
• Give advice, care and support to women who lose or terminate their pregnancies for whatever reason and provide support and guidance for midwives who are less experienced in this aspect of midwifery care.
• Maintain competence in, manage and co-ordinate emergency procedures which require knowledge and expertise whilst awaiting medical assistance.
• Record and report all adverse clinical risks utilising the appropriate incident reporting system and forms.

Education

• Participate in the setting, maintaining and reviewing of standards of midwifery practice. Participate in the teaching and orientation of learners and new members of staff.
• To provide the effective mentoring/associate mentoring and assessment of student midwives and ensure that appropriate records and reports on student progress are available to the relevant University.
• Disseminate professional and clinical knowledge to colleagues. Encourage and develop innovation in practice.
• Ensure that appropriate health education is provided for women and their families making full use of available resources. Introducing new developments and practices as necessary.
• Participate in Trust mandatory training programmes, including MOMS.
• Play an active role in the planning and provision of parent education and information programmes.

• Practising midwife with previous experience
• Evidence of a commitment to post-registration education and achievement of all the preceptorship programme competencies

• Practice supervisor and/or practice assessor qualification
• NIPE trained
• Minimum of 2 years post preceptor experience

Experience

Essential

• Previous comprehensive midwifery experience in all areas of midwifery.
• Evidence of previous management of a ward area or community case load in the absence of the senior midwife.
• Experience of providing care in a Birth Centre or low risk maternity unit
