This is a new and exciting initiative to develop a Speech and Language Therapy service into Care Homes across North Cumbria following the publication of The Framework for Enhanced Care in Care Homes (2020) We have secured permanent funding from the Ageing Well Agenda for 2 WTE posts - Band 7 highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist team lead supported by a Band 6 specialist Speech and Language Therapist.
This post will support a Band 7 team lead in setting up and delivering an enhanced Speech and Language Therapy service into care homes to facilitate a whole care home approach to improving nutrition and hydration and enhancing communication within the care home population.
The post holder will need to have experience in delivering a service into care homes as well as experience in developing and delivering training to other teams and staff groups
The post holder will have opportunities to develop their own competencies through the Enhanced Care of Older People Competency Framework framework to directly support service development in to this population.
There will also be opportunities to be involved in national initiatives to improve the health and well being of the care home population e.g. National Hydration pilot.
The post holder will be part of a small, friendly, enthusiastic team with close links with ICC teams and third sector. The department has a robust appraisal and supervision structure with opportunities for clinical and management development.
Main duties of the job
- To provide specialist assessment, management and treatment to patients with swallowing and/or communication problems in the care home population.
- To be responsible for a specialist Speech and Language Therapy care home caseload across North Cumbria as part of the wider community Speech and Language Therapy team.
- To participate in the development and delivery of training and information packages for a wide range of professionals and carers working in care homes.
- To work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary framework to achieve integrated care for patients.
- To support clinical education and student placements.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
- Registered with HCPC
- On-going membership with the RCSLT
- Evidence of formal training/self-study/ specialist experience to post graduate level in dysphagia
- Experience of organising, managing and prioritising a clinical caseload
- Experience of working as part of a MDT
- Experience of working with other professionals and agencies.
- Experience of assessment and management of swallowing
- Experience of community care home working
- Experience of working with frail elderly population
- Delivering training to others e.g. carers and other AHPs
- RCSLT code of conduct and professional standards.
- Knowledge of local and national drivers in community care home practice and how they relate to SLT practice
- Knowledge of swallowing and communication disorders and their impact on the elderly frail population.
- To demonstrate a breadth of specialist knowledge with decision making underpinned by current evidence in elderly care
- Knowledge of current clinical procedures
- Good working knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and SLT role in the process
- Good working knowledge of prognostic indicators in frail elderly
- Clinical governance as it affects clinical practice, in line with national and local drivers
