The Jobholder is responsible for the management of a defined caseload.The jobholder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care.The jobholder will provide specialist nursing care and advice to patients who require urological Nursing and will contribute to the development of the speciality service.The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources

The post holder will work with the Band 7 Benign CNS team leader to develop and support our service for patients who require urological nursing within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

The role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Urology is autonomous and covers four main areas:caseload management, clinical practice, education and research and will reflect the needs of our patients, urological consultants, senior nursing, medical consultants within associated services, inhouse service developments and national guidelines.

With the appropriate support and training we expect the individual to provide advice, information and support to patients, carers and staff regarding Urological nursing.We expect the individual to provide care for patients in line with Trust and Government strategies and targets.In collaboration with senior medical and nursing staff the post holder will assist in the support of research, audit and quality assurance projects.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will require an in depth background, and knowledge of Benign Urology nursing, excellent communication skills, a willingness to develop the service and have the desire to continually improve patient care.

1.Acts in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct.

2. Provide a specialist nursing service for patients with Benign urological disease who require support and treatment through the continuum of care.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide high quality specialist nursing care to patients with urological conditions. The post holder will provide support and advice to patients and their families as well as acting as a resource to other professionals.

To undertake nurse led clinics in line with identified protocols and clinical guidance. The list of clinics include:

1. Trial without catheter (TWOC)

2. Catheter change

3. Bladder Instillation service (Painful Bladder Syndrome)

4. Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) -One Stop Clinic

5. Lithotripsy

6. Erectile Dysfunction

7. Continence

Liaise with medical team to report any significant clinical changes reported by the patients and facilitate any recommendations following medical discussion.

To demonstrate specialist skills and knowledge through expert nursing practice.

To promote and maintain effective communication.

To liaise with Clinical Lead and Team Leader on issues of service management and development for Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust (LTHT) AND THE Urology Service.

To review and develop written policies, protocols and guidance relevant to this patient group, in conjunction with the Multidisciplinary team. Updated as stipulated.

To be responsible for own professional development and maintenance of standards supported by Lead nurse and Team leader.

Accept appropriate referrals from MDT colleagues.

Where appropriate work collaboratively with MDT colleagues across Primary and Secondary care to provide a seamless service delivery to the patient, family and / carer as appropriate.

Identify and promote specific symptom management strategies as well as the identification of triggers which may cause exacerbation of symptoms. Provide patients with appropriate self-management strategies and escalation pathways.

Contribute to the design, development and implementation of education programmes and resources for the patient, family and or carer in relation to urological diseases thus empowering them to self manage their condition.

Provide mentorship for nursing colleagues as appropriate and create exchange of learning opportunities within the MDT.

Use outcomes of audit to improve service provision.

Experience

• Significant post registration experience at Band 5 or equivalent and experience within urology/ relevant speciality.
