An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 (minimum 3 years experience) midwife to work within the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Team. The role requires knowledge and understanding of the Public Health England national antenatal and newborn screening programmes. The advert is for a part time position of 22.5 hours (0.6WTE). Working hours will be Monday to Saturday, varied shifts between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm. We require candidates who are interested in all aspects of the antenatal and newborn screening programmes. We are looking for candidates who have experience working with pregnant women who are HIV positive, who hold the NIPE qualification and hold a Haemoglobinopathy screening qualification or are embarking on one, such as PEGASUS or the Genetic Risk Assessment and Counselling course (GRAC).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the NUH Trust Antenatal and Newborn Screening Coordinators who are responsible for the delivery of the national Antenatal and newborn screening Programmes. The post holder will be involved in audit, practice change and development, support with local and national data collection and audits, Quarterly KPI and annual data submissions, contribute to annual reports Education and training of registered and non-registered staff members, monitor and action national screening programme failsafe's and attend national and local meetings.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will support the NUH Trust Antenatal and Newborn Screening Coordinators who are responsible for the delivery of the national Antenatal and newborn screening Programmes. The post holder will be involved in audit, practice change and development, support with local and national data collection and audits, Quarterly KPI and annual data submissions, contribute to annual reports Education and training of registered and non-registered staff members, monitor and action national screening programme failsafes and attend national and local meetings. The role of antenatal and newborn screening midwife is a varied role requiring specialist knowledge. The post holder will be able to support with counselling and obtaining consent from women and parents for the Antenatal and newborn screening programmes offered. The counselling of women following a positive or high chance result following screening test or of an unexpected finding of the fetus on the dating or anomaly Ultrasound scans. The post holder will act as a resource for community and hospital midwives and doctors if they have queries around screening programmes and the women and babies they are caring for. The post holder must have the ability to contribute to the effective communication between different members of the multidisciplinary team, including hospital and community midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists ,paediatricians and specialist nurses. The post holder will be expected to work across both City and QMC campus varied shifts between the hours of 8.00hrs and 18.00hrs Monday Saturday . The post holder will: assist the Antenatal and newborn Screening coordinators to support women with a positive Infectious disease screening result, Syphillis Hep B and HIV and the submission of national data requirements Participate in the training and supervision of midwives and student midwives, encouraging their professional development and clinical supervision to maintain and develop research based skills Assist with the development and implementation of agreed policies, procedures and standards. Be Able to initiate change and develop practice, in response to the needs of internal and external customers Actively seek patient feedback of their experiences of maternity care at NUH and use this information to build the quality of services provided. Assist with annual Antenatal and Newborn screening patient satisfaction surveys Contribute to active risk reduction and ensuring Quality Control of the care provided at NUH. Contribute to the effective communication between different members of the multidisciplinary team, including hospital and community midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists paediatricians and specialist nurses. Work flexibly as a member of the screening team and support the ward and community midwives to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated, and where necessary improved. Report incidents as per NUH and NHSEE guidance. To action recommendations and inform NUH staff of the learning outcomes and changes to practice

Person Specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Midwife band 6
  • Have a suitable Teaching & Assessing Qualification. Possession of a Mentoring Course.
  • Demonstrates continuous personal & professional development.


Desirable

  • Evidence working with HIV positive pregnant women
  • NIPE qualification
  • Pegasus / Genetic Risk Assessment and Counselling course
  • Degree in health related subject.
  • Counselling course / qualification


Experience

Essential

  • Experience at Band 6 for a minimum of 3 years
  • Supervision & evidence of ability to mentor none registered staff & midwifery/nursing students
  • Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relative/carers and staff.
  • Knowledge and understanding of PHE national requirements for Antenatal and newborn Screening Programmes
  • Experience working within a MDT
  • Evidence of conducting Audits
  • Evidence of service development


Communication and Relationship skills

Essential

  • Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents
