The unit currently opens Monday to Friday , however applicants must be prepared to work weekends and bank holidays as and when the demands change and are commissioned.

Main duties of the job

  • To work within the Haematology Team in developing the service to meet the needs of our community. Developing the service in line with best practice, evidence based nursing and medicine, and national standards for Haematology.
  • The Specialist Haematology Nurse will provide clinical support and expertise to haematology patients and other healthcare professionals in the Trust and community.
  • To work in collaboration with other colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team to provide the highest possible standard of care and support to haematology patients and their families/carers
  • To have relevant expertise and knowledge related to possible investigations and treatment options and so provide patients with the necessary information to maximise informed consent.
  • To assist in the enrolment of patients into national trials and ensure that trial protocols are adhered to at all times, organising investigations and treatments as necessary.
  • To assist in the education of the multi-disciplinary team both in the primary and secondary care.
  • To provide the link between the palliative care needs of patients from diagnosis to terminal care in hospital and community, by participation in community care needs of patients.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To provide clinical support and expertise in all areas of the haematology service including ward, day treatment centre, outpatients clinic via home visits/follow up visits to all patients and relatives at all stages of disease and treatment (newly diagnosed through to remission).
  • To work alongside other Haematology Nurse Specialist nurse in nurse led clinics in Myeloma
  • To support and advise patients and relatives within the terminal stages of haematological conditions and to liaise with all persons involved in the multi-disciplinary team, palliative care team and community.
  • To liaise with all grades of staff within the hospital and community to provide support, advice and education on haematological disease and the care of the patient.
  • To co-ordinate, review, maintain and develop standards of venous access service provided to haematology patients, including peripheral cannulation and insertions of skin tunnelled catheters.
  • Works in partnership with Ward 17 to develop care pathways for haematology in-patients.
  • To act as a resource for students and learners, junior members of staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To undertake specific training programmes relating to own role.
  • To identify the education and training needs of the haematology service. To develop teaching/education packages for all levels of hospital and community staff
  • To support staff to recognise learning needs through appraisal, identify and organise ways to address them.
  • To evaluate own practice and seek feedback from others.


Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent) or willingness to undertake
  • Post registration module in Haematology or Chemotherapy
  • Regsitered General Nurse (Adult)


Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Recent post registration experience in a Haematology setting at Band 6 or above


Desirable

  • Experience in caseload management and Nurse Led Clinics
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit


Skills abilities & competencies

Essential

  • Advanced IV cannulation, venepuncture and chemotherapy administration skills
  • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of National Standards and Government initiatives in haematology
  • Able to demonstrate initiative when balancing work demands
  • Excellent teaching skills including experience of teaching qualified nursing staff
  • Can demonstrate attention to detail


Desirable

  • Expanded skills i.e. Bone Marrow biopsy/ Bone Marrow Aspiration
