Main duties of the job
The post supports the safeguarding agenda through the Trust utilising a governance framework ensuring that safeguarding is embedded as a fundamental principle and is seen as core business. To promote safeguarding, raise awareness and support staff in all aspects of safeguarding work, communicating the message that safeguarding is 'everyone's responsibility'.
To support the Named Nurse to provide assurance that the Trust is meeting its statutory safeguarding duties (Health & Social Care Act 2008, Care Act 2014 and Care Quality Commission Core Standards)
The post holder will work with and support the Named Nurse to lead on, develop, promote and deliver the safeguarding agenda throughout the organisation.
The post holder will provide visible leadership at ward / department level providing specialist advice, support and guidance to all Trust staff in all aspects of safeguarding matters, including Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity and Best Interest decision making, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), Domestic Abuse, Gender Based Abuse (Female Genital Mutilation, Honour Based Abuse, Forced Marriage) and Modern Slavery / Human Trafficking.

Job responsibilities
Participate in the planning, implementation and delivery of safeguarding adult agenda training throughout the organisation (which will include Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity and Best Interest decision making, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), Domestic Abuse, Gender Based Abuse (Female Genital Mutilation, Honour Based Abuse, Forced Marriage) and Modern Slavery / Human Trafficking, Prevent, MAPPA, Dementia, Learning Disability and Mental Health). This will include the delivery of Level 3 safeguarding training together with Trust induction.
Provide ongoing education and develop bespoke sessions to meet individual departmental / ward need as required.
Provide expert advice, support and guidance to staff, promoting a high level of judgment, discretion and decision making in relation to all safeguarding matters. This will include supporting staff with safeguarding concerns, safeguarding referrals, DoLS applications, domestic abuse risk assessments and MARAC referrals.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care and interventions using advanced adult safeguarding knowledge together with the legal frameworks and relevant legislation.
Refer patients as appropriate to other members of the multi-disciplinary / agency teams.
Work collaboratively with external partners / local authority Safeguarding Teams, ensuring effective communication and interagency working.
Support and promote all underpinning safeguarding principles and ensure the fundamental of Making Safeguarding Personal is understood, valued and embedded across the organisation, ensuring that the voice of the adult is sought and heard.
Appropriately manages or escalates incidents that present via any and all means, including staff allegations, safeguarding concerns, complaints or Freedom to Speak Up.
Provide appropriate advice and support to all staff to ensure the safe and appropriate management of safeguarding adult incidents.
Offer advice and support as necessary to Ward / Departmental managers in all aspects of safeguarding management in order to complete local Datix investigations in relation to Safeguarding agenda.
Review and analyse adult safeguarding incidents as required, ensuring all appropriate actions taken, and where not, provide remedial safeguarding management. Contribute to learning reviews to ensure that incidents are critically appraised, with learning shared across the organisation.
Implementation and application of policies, procedures and processes relation to safeguarding agenda.
Work with Named Nurse Safeguarding Adults to deliver the Trust Safeguarding objectives and strategy.
Conduct adult safeguarding audits within the organisation and implement recommendations / actions. This is to provide assurance that safeguarding responsibilities of the Trust are being fully implemented.
Collate information for quarterly safeguarding forums / meetings / committee.
Provide and receive highly complex and sensitive information related to safeguarding and be skilled in effectively communicating this information to various multi-agency teams across health and social care economy.
Disseminate and cascade all relevant information to departmental safeguarding champions and ward / departmental as required.
Provide expert guidance to ward / departmental managers, and other designated key staff, in developing and strengthening their safeguarding skills, and meeting their responsibilities for safeguarding adults at risk within their areas.
On direction from Named Nurse, lead on specific projects and work streams.
Negotiate difficult situations arising from the often complex nature of safeguarding adults, ensuring that this is recognised and acknowledged, with coping mechanisms being identified.
Maintain contemporaneous documentation and records in line with NMC responsibilities, together with data protection and information governance standards.
Provide appropriate professional challenge when indicated, ensuring that safeguarding best practice is promoted at all times.
Support the Named Nurse with the collation and complete chronologies for Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SAR) / Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHR) / LeDeR Reviews, when requested by local Safeguarding Adults Board (SAB) and disseminate identified learning across the organisation.
Organise and plan own day to day workload or activities in order to meet the demands of the job role.
Assist in the provision of support / debrief for staff involved in complex safeguarding adult / abuse cases.
Assist in the provision of group safeguarding supervision for clinical staff across the organisation.
