The East & South East London NHS Pathology Partnership (Pathology Partnership) is a Pathology network formed across three NHS Trusts: Barts Health, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

The Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics department at the Royal London Hospital is expanding its team. We are a Cellular Pathology Genomic Centre (CPGC), as awarded by the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub, as well as taking part in the Cancer Vaccine Launchpad (CVLP) clinical trial. This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing team in both diagnostics and research

This position offers a new and exciting opportunity with approved fixed-term funding from NHSE we are working closely with both NHSE with the aim to secure funding and make positions substantive in the future.

Main duties of the job

The IHC department is seeking to recruit a competent, enthusiastic, and highly motivated individual, with substantive experience in Cellular Pathology and the candidate would also benefit from previous IHC experience to provide technical / quality support to our professional and friendly team. Knowledge of using the Benchmark Ultra and Bond platforms are also desirable.

The successful candidate will take part in the day-to-day operations under the lead of the senior scientist to ensure that the department is operating effectively whilst meeting TAT, ensuring cases are ready for MDT, molecular samples are processed for both DNA -RNA extraction / FISH and CVLP work is completed in the set timeframe.

The position will be primarily based in IHC, however rotation into other areas of the laboratory may be required depending on departmental needs. Attention to detail is essential in this role.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services Immunology Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Immunophenotyping Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma. The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. �126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Qualifications

Essential

  • IBMS Accredited BSc Biomedical Science degree, or equivalent.
  • Registration with the HCPC
  • Specialist Portfolio


Desirable

  • IHC qualifications


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a Cellular Pathology laboratory
  • Substantive post-registration experience of working in a Cellular Pathology laboratory.
  • Experience working in a immunohistochemistry laboratory.


Desirable

  • Experience working in a immunohistochemistry laboratory.
  • Previous experience in answering and dealing with telephone enquiries.
  • Experience with microscopic quality control of antibodies.


Knowledge

Essential

  • IT Literate including use of Microsoft word, data analysis and use of a Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Knowledge of IHC techniques and their applications.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting IHC


Desirable

  • Additional qualification in IHC and its techniques.

  • Computer keyboard skills.
