We invite applications from suitably qualified senior specialty doctors for the position of Specialist in Anaesthesia, with significant experience in the NHS and UK healthcare system.This role supports the delivery of Anaesthetic services at The Christie Withington site, one of Europe's leading cancer centres. The position is for a permanent 10 PA contract.The successful candidate must have full GMC registration and be able to demonstrate comprehensive independent practice as a Specialty doctor in Anaesthesia for at least 6 years, with a minimum of 12 years in medical roles since obtaining their primary medical qualification. While an FRCA or equivalent diploma in Anaesthesia is desirable, extensive airway management skills are essential.The position offers the following opportunities:o Participation in Trust and Departmental induction programmeso Weekly departmental teaching sessionso Experience in clinical anaesthesia for a wide range of complex oncological surgical procedures, often requiring multidisciplinary collaboration, as well as for radiotherapyo Involvement in Acute and Chronic Pain Serviceso Access to comprehensive educational programmes within the Trust, the University of Manchester, and the Greater Manchester regiono Consultant support for the post holder's specific developmental needs.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in an integrated oncological critical care setting, providing high-quality patient care on a daily basis. They will be responsible for delivering an independent Anaesthesia service during daytime hours across our main Theatre areas, which encompass Colorectal, Gynaecology, Plastics, Brachytherapy, and Urology specialties.The role includes a mix of fixed and flexible theatre sessions dedicated to clinical Anaesthesia, with responsibilities as a Clinical Support Anaesthetist. This position does not include on-call duties.

The site also boasts the Oak Road Treatment Centre chemotherapy suite, the largest in the UK operating six days a week, a Brachytherapy unit, an expanded Young Oncology and Haem-oncology unit, Maggie's Centre, and the Manchester Cancer Research Centre. Additionally, the Paterson research facility is undergoing an exciting redevelopment, set to open in 2021, which will foster opportunities for collaborative team research.The department is staffed by 22 Consultant Anaesthetists and 8 Specialty Doctors, who support the advancement of Anaesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Services at The Christie. There is also an active pre-operative and pre-habilitation service that includes in-house CPET and pulmonary function testing. Role Purpose
The role is accountable to the Clinical Director for Anaesthesia & Critical, the successful post holder will deliver independent General Anaesthesia to patients in the general theatre and brachytherapy at The Christie Withington site, they will manage the difficulties if dealing with complexities and uncertainty in the care of our patients undergoing surgery, whilst employing expertise and clinical decision-making skills of an autonomous senior clinician.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESi. Provision of a service to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, with responsibility for covering all related theatre activities required by Anaesthetics including general and brachytherapy theatres, with some cover of Intensive Care.ii. Responsibility for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan.
iii. Provision of cover for colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients & supervision of doctors in training.
iv. Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of more junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, assessment & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
v. Participate in clinical audit as part of quality improvement activity under local arrangements.
vi. Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by a trust approved appraiser.
vii. Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust keeping up to date with evidence-based practice.
viii. Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as Duties of a Doctor, Good Medical Practice, & the GMC Performance Procedures.
ix. Requirements to undertake occasional additional duties within other hospitals sites belonging to the Trust.
