UHCW is one of the busiest Major Trauma Centres in England at the hub of the Central England Trauma Network and serves a resident population of circa 1.9million. The successful candidate will join an excellent, forward thinking team who are strongly committed to evidence based practice, patient focused service improvement and continuing personal and professional development.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Nurse Adult (RNA) or an Allied Health Professional (AHP) with a background in trauma within the acute hospital setting to join the Major Trauma Service (MTS) at UHCW.

As a Major Trauma Acute Coordinator you will be responsible for holistic patient care and coordination, supporting patients and their relatives throughout the hospital admission. The Major Trauma Service oversees the patient pathway from both the emergency department and transfers in from other hospitals through to hospital discharge and the early phase of rehabilitation.

This post is ideal for an enthusiastic clinician who wishes to broaden their trauma knowledge and work in a experienced diverse multidisciplinary team. This post forms part of a 7-day working roster so the successful candidate will be required to work weekend shifts on a regular basis.

Main duties of the job

The role willencompass the full set ofresponsibilities as set out in theaccompanying job description but in summary the key responsibilities are:
  • To work with the Major Trauma Service Lead and Clinical Lead to provide a safe and effective patient centred service for all patients suffering Major Trauma.
  • Close liaison with the lead admitting consultants and their teams to facilitate an optimal care pathway for the patients.
  • To attend and facilitate multidisciplinary meetings.
  • To support the Resus Trauma Team in the emergency department including supporting with the delivery of the massive haemorrhage protocol (MHP).
  • To participate in and lead staff training, development and supervision trust wide.
  • To work with our external partners in Trauma Units, Local Emergency Hospitals and the Central England Rehabilitation Unit and the National Trauma Network to arrange early rehabilitation and care closer to home when clinically appropriate.
  • Maintain the current service and help initiate and implement service improvements.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Maintain oversight of all NMTR eligible trauma patients within the Trust using various methods to capture patients who are admitted following trauma either via ED or directly to the wards from referring hospitals using the relevant databases and systems.
  • Keep accurate patient specific records for all major trauma patients summarising injuries, interventions, ongoing actions, follow up and significant events. Ensure patients and families are being kept informed of relevant plans.
  • Ensure that all injuries have management plans and the relevant specialities are involved in the patients care.
  • Participate in the 7-day working roster to ensure equality in service provision to all major trauma patients with robust handover between shifts.
  • Have a broad understanding of trauma care and be able to escalate appropriately cases where treatment or plans may be incorrect or treatment is not performed in a timely manner. Maintain high levels of communication with clinical areas such as critical care, wards and rehabilitation teams to support in the admission and planning of care
  • Attend trauma calls working within own scope of practice. Examples of roles during a Trauma Call: Scribe, acting as a prompt and resource for the Trauma Team Leader or other members of the team, communication with specialities or Theatres. Administration of blood & blood components during an MHP
  • Work in conjunction with the Major Trauma rehabilitation coordinators to ensure that all patients rehabilitation needs are assessed and met at the appropriate stage of their recovery and a rehabilitation prescription completed as required. Ensure a smooth handover of patient care to the trauma rehabilitation team at the appropriate point in their pathway
  • Support the Major Trauma Rehabilitation team with patients who deteriorate or require ongoing planning by specialities to facilitate best care
  • Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team and specialities involved in trauma care, including charities and signposting/ support services.
