Are you an experienced children's nurse looking for a new challenge? We are seeking an exceptional nurse, an inclusive compassionate leader with a commitment and passion for children's palliative care

As a clinical nurse specialist, you will lead, advise and support medical, nursing and AHP colleagues in hospital and community, on all aspects of care for children on a palliative care pathway. Participation in a 24/7 on-call rota for children requiring palliative and end of life care is an important part of this role.

As a Team Lead, you will be responsible for providing a flexible short-breaks service which predominantly is accessed Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm with some evening and weekend senior nurse on-call cover as required.

Applicants must be NMC RN(child)/RSCN, hold a relevant first degree, a specialist qualification in children's palliative care and a teaching qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience of caring for children with life-limiting and/or progressive illness including caring for children and young people at end of life.

The MSc Palliative Medicine for Health Care Professionals , an advanced communication course and an NMC recorded V300 Non-Medical Prescribing qualification is desirable for this post. There is a strong commitment to supporting the professional development, training and education of the successful candidate, as well as their health and wellbeing through external therapeutic supervision.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of palliative and end of life care and provide direct nursing intervention when required, working across boundaries with hospital and community nursing teams.

The post-holder will lead, develop and implement a specialist palliative / end of life care structured education / training programme with clinical competencies for the teams palliative support workers,nursing and medical team inpatient services as well as working as an integral member of the children's community nursing teams in the provision of palliative and end of life care.

As a Team Leader you will provide strong clinical leadership and daily operational management of the county-wide short-breaks team ensuring the delivery of high quality care to children and young people 0-19 years with palliative care needs and their families.

Job responsibilities

The specialist children's palliative care and short breaks team is currently made up of a palliative care nurse specialist / Team Leader (this post) and 3 palliative healthcare support workers. The team is part of a wider team consisting of community children's nurses (CCNs), children's Macmillan nurses and specialist family practitioners team, which is integral to ULHTs children's community services.

The aim of the service is to provide high quality short break care / palliative care to children whilst enhancing the quality of life for the whole family.

Working in collaboration with the matron, senior community children's nursing (CCN) leads and the wider CCN teams and specialists, the successful candidate can expect a warm welcome from a team that are kind, compassionate, inclusive and supportive. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse (Child)
  • First Degree in relevant subject / equivalent qualification or experience
  • Leadership & management qualification or equivalent experience
  • Teaching & Mentorship Qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development and training.


Desirable

  • MSc Palliative Medicine for Health Care Professionals
  • Advanced communication course
  • NMC recorded V300 Non-Medical Prescribing qualification.
  • Community Health Degree with Community Children's Specialist Practitioner qualification (SPQ)


Previous Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of a wide experience of children's nursing
  • Recent experience of caring for children and young people with medical complexities, life-limiting and/or progressive illness at Band 6 level with experience in palliative / end of life care.
  • Experience of managing a nursing caseload and of working within the Community Setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written & verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage complex & difficult emotional situations.
  • Knowledge & experience of collaborative multi-disciplinary working.
  • Sound knowledge and experience of safeguarding children & vulnerable adults


Desirable

  • Previous experience of leading & managing a team.
  • Previous experience of managing and advising on symptom control.

  • Ability to travel independently throughout Lincolnshire and across the region as and when required
  • Able to work flexibly, prioritise and respond to changing demands in workload including evening / night visits, weekends if required and participate in the 24/7 on-call service.
