These posts are subject to National NHS T&Cs, paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during nights, weekends and bank holidays and we offer a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 to new starters with the Trust in this role (payable in instalments over a 2 year period)

The Offender Health Directorate is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK. It provides physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services to a prison population of over 10 000 in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire including different categories of prison.

HMP Morton Hall opened in December 2021. The establishment is operating as a Category C Foreign National Offender prison with a population of approximately 400 adult males. The role will also include some work at the Swinderby Unit- Home Office Short Term Holding Facility, located next to the prison, offering a variety of opportunities for all successful applicants.

Main duties of the job

The Mental Health Team at HMP Morton Hall will provide a holistic, stepped care approach to the delivery of mental healthcare and cover all mental disorders including anxiety, depression, severe and enduring mental illness, personality disorder and neurodevelopmental disorders.

We will be fully adherent to the Care Programme Approach process and have an overview of all psychological and pharmacological aspects of care for our patients from assessment to recovery. The team will be responsible for providing and coordinating care and case management for a diverse client group with multiple and often complex needs. Applicants will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current legislation and clinical risk assessment.

Job responsibilities

Are you an outstanding mental health professional who is passionate about quality and patient experience? If so, we would like you to be part of the Offender Health Team. We welcome applications from Registered Mental Health and/or Learning Disability Nurses.

You will be part of a supportive multi-disciplinary team, with focus on assessment of need, treatment, and recovery, while placing the patient at the centre of care planning. You will be able to evidence:

Experience of providing mental health assessment and intervention to patients with a wide range of different emotional and mental health needs.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, to include managing and resolving conflict.

Ability to engage and develop therapeutic relationships with patients.

Experience of multi-agency and multi-disciplinary working.

Experience in provision of evidence-based treatments and interventions.

Proven ability to undertake accurate risk assessment and management plans.

Proven ability to recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns.

Proven ability to manage a defined caseload and organise work schedule.

Ability to maintain contemporaneous and accurate records in line with NMC Code and Trust policies and procedures.

Ability to use electronic date recording systems, for example SystmOne.

Experience of using clinical supervision effectively to enhance practice and patient outcomes.

To be able to work as an autonomous practitioner whilst being able to work as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team.

As duty worker, respond to crisis calls and participate in Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) reviews-the care planning and risk management process for prisoners identified as being at risk of suicide or self-harm.

  • Excellent and effective written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Effective problem solving and decision making.
  • Experience in child and adult safeguarding procedures.
  • Evidence of effective and appropriate documentation.

Desirable
  • Evidence of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Knowledge
Essential
  • Knowledge of assessment and care planning, to include CPA.
  • An understanding of Personality Disorders.
  • An understanding of deliberate self-harm, and risk management.

Desirable
  • Knowledge and or experience of the ACCT process.
  • Knowledge of local and national strategies.

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working in Mental Health Services.
  • Experience of prioritising patients with a range of mental health issues.
  • Effective case management/care planning skills.
  • Experience of working effectively within a MDT/interagency working.
  • Supervision and appraisal of staff.

Desirable
  • Forensic and/ or prison/or criminal justice nursing experience.
