Following the expansion of the County Elective Hub, UHNM is looking to recruit 2 Locum Specialist Doctors in Trauma and Orthopaedics specialising in hip and knee arthroplasty.

This post represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team of consultant colleagues at a University Teaching Hospital which provides a wide range of elective orthopaedic services and tertiary services.

UHNM is the Major Trauma Centre for the North West Midlands and North Wales network serving the population of Staffordshire, South Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales. The Major Trauma Centre has an excellent reputation and is one of the busiest for spine and orthopaedic trauma.

The successful applicant will be expected to support the treatment of orthopaedic patients across both our sites at Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital, Stafford. The applicant should demonstrate that they are able to perform at consultant level in elective orthopaedic surgery and be flexible in their approach to help backfill consultants in the elective service when they are on leave or consultant of the week on call duties.

Main duties of the job

To see new patient referrals into the hip and knee service with a view to generate an independent caseload of patients for inpatient treatment.

To provide leadership and skill in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty surgery.

Be able to participate and manage independent orthopaedic elective operating lists (the elective practice will be hip and knee arthroplasty).

To manage and be responsible for continuing care of patients with hip and knee problems in partnership with consultant colleagues.

To provide Consultant level cover for the Department of Orthopaedics.

Provide independent assessment, investigation and surgical and non-surgical management of orthopaedic patients admitted electively.

Be able to work alongside consultant colleagues in theatre where necessary.

Flexibly work to allow back filling of clinic and theatre sessions as required.

Person Specification

Professional Values and Behaviours, Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Completed at least 12 years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on part time basis) or have equivalent experience and competencies
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • At least 6 years' experience in a relevant specialty
  • FRCS (UK) part 1 or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Experience in a range of Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery, specifically for hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Practices with the professional values and behaviours expected of all doctors as set out in the GMC Good Medical Practice and the Generic Professional Capabilities Framework (or equivalent for dentists).

  • PHD/Masters Degree
