St Bartholomew's Hospital, has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our SLT team based in the City of London
We are a friendly team working with high profile tertiary specialist services including Cardiothoracic Surgery, a large Critical Care Unit, Oncology and Respiratory medicine.
If you want to develop your knowledge, skills and experience in acute hospital care then this post will offer excellent structured opportunities. You will join a supportive and dynamic team with great opportunities for developing specialist skills including videofluoroscopy and tracheostomy management.
The post holder would need to be independent in the management of dysphagia and have experience in managing complex communication and swallowing disorders in an acute hospital setting. There are great opportunities for developing your specialist clinical skills and you will be supported to participate in service development activities. The Bart's SLT team also has strong links with the MDT across various pathways, established weekly videofluoroscopy clinics and regular access to FEES.
There is regular clinical supervision and opportunities for peer support and continuing professional development including structured annual appraisal
Main duties of the job
The post holder would need to be independent in the management of dysphagia and have experience in managing complex communication and swallowing disorders. The SLT teams have strong links with the MDT across various pathways, established weekly videofluoroscopy clinics and regular access to FEES. Tracheostomy training is provided inhouse.
The Barts Health SLT service covers a large part of the culturally and economically diverse population of East London and covers four acute hospital sites and two community areas. You will be joining a large SLT department based across these sites with specialist expertise across the patient journey. There is regular clinical supervision and opportunities for peer support and continuing professional development including structured annual appraisal.
About us
The post holder will be a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist and will be a member of the SLT service based at St. Bartholomew's Hospital (SBH) with close links to the SLT team across other Bart's Health sites. The wider Barts Health adult SLT services also cover Whipps Cross Hospital and Newham Hospital as well as the community teams in Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.
The post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team based at SBH delivering the therapy services to the Barts Heart Centre (BHC) and/or Barts Cancer Center (BCC) . The role will include providing specialist assessment and treatment to adults with complex acquired communication and swallowing difficulties, including tracheostomy management, rehabilitation and video fluoroscopy. There is a robust FEES service on site.
The post holder will work as part of the therapies team and be involved with service developments along the designated clinical pathways (e.g. critical care, cardiology and oncology). There will be significant service development and education opportunities for the post holder alongside Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics and other SLT colleagues. The post holder will access support and supervision from the Clinical Lead and Band 7 SLT colleagues on site.

- Post-qualification experience working with adults with oncological and/or cardiovascular conditions in a variety of settings but a proportion of which should be with acute inpatients.
- Relevant experience post qualification in assessment and management of acquired communication/swallowing disorders of neurological aetiology
- Experience and knowledge of relevant SLT approaches to palliative patients with in depth experience of risk feeding principles.

- Experience with tracheostomy.
