We are looking for a therapist to join our team to cover the private patient ward Parkside which covers elective orthopaedics, surgery and medical patients at Wexham Park Hospital. This role will sit under the orthopaedic physiotherapy team. The role is currently part time (30 hours per week) with potential to increase hours in the future.

The therapist will work within our established team and receive regular support, supervision and training. They will be expected to work on the orthopaedic weekend rota.

You will need to have had experience of working in an inpatient setting as a band 4 and experience within orthopaedics and surgery.

The successful applicant for this role will also manage the physiotherapy assistant staff having a leading role in their recruitment, training and mentoring.

Main duties of the job

PURPOSE OF JOB:
  • To work as an integral and active part of the therapy and multi-disciplinary team. They will be responsible for supporting the therapy team and leading the therapy assistant team in the provision of a patient centred service, in an efficient and cost-effective way.
  • To provide a high standard therapy service to the Parkside elective ward, assist on orthopaedic ward and assist outpatients with elective follow ups when required / with Outpatient classes when required in the absence of an Outpatient physiotherapist.
  • To lead in the recruitment and interview process for new therapy assistants.
  • To organise and lead the training programme and induction of therapy assistants and junior staff on rotation.
  • To lead a team of therapy assistants to include supervision, appraisals, training, sickness management, risk assessment, performance management and represent the assistant workforce at appropriate therapy leadership meetings.
  • Participate in the provision of the Orthopaedic Therapy weekend service which will include being part of a rota that covers weekends, and bank holidays.
  • To link with the Parkside team cross site (FPH/HWD) for training and joined up working.
  • To work independently within competency framework (work will be managed not supervised) on the Parkside ward to provide a high standard therapy service to all patients requiring therapy.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To develop sound clinical knowledge of therapy clinical reasoning within the field of orthopaedics and surgery.
  • To formulate soundly reasoned prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing negotiated goals leading to comprehensive discharge plans.
  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work, including the management of patients in your care within the competencies set by designated qualified therapist.
  • To undertake a comprehensive primary assessment of patients, including those with diverse presentation/multi pathologies, using clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition within the competency-based boundaries.
  • To use fine motor skills re adjustment of walking aids and bracing, measuring for equipment etc.
  • To formulate and deliver an individual therapy treatment programme based on sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills including manual therapy techniques, patient education, exercise classes, transfers, specialist equipment and other alternative options within the competency based boundaries.
  • To demonstrate a physical ability to carry out therapy interventions and therapeutic handling without direct supervision. There is a frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several short periods during the day.
  • Motivate patients to exercise and address barriers to compliance.
  • To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients, relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
  • To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
  • To evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes, reassess ongoing need for current equipment and alter equipment provision as required. Access is available to senior staff
  • To assess and manage clinical risk within own patient caseload, to be aware of safe practise and need for onward referral, particularly when carrying out exercise testing and exercise programmes.
  • To ensure that your own practice complies with the professional standards of therapy (PT/OT) practice.
  • To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations change/arise.
  • To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with professional and Trust standards of practice.
  • To represent therapy service and/or individual patients at the multi-disciplinary team meetings.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC Registration
  • Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy
  • Demonstrate up to date knowledge of best clinical practice in relevant speciality.
  • Understanding of professional ethics and their application in practice.
  • Demonstrate understanding & involvement of Clinical Governance and risk assessment
  • Basic knowledge of health legislation.
