Due to retirement of the current postholder, we are seeking to appoint a new Head of Radiation Safety and Radiology Physics in the MPCE Department at Guy's and St Thomas'. This is an exciting opportunity for a medical physicist with the expertise and experience needed to work at the highest level of radiation physics practice in one of the country's largest and most successful NHS trusts.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will work at the top level of professional expertise to manage the implementation and audit of legislation, codes of practice and other relevant guidance in radiation safety. The postholder will act as the Radiation Protection Adviser for the Trust and provide expert advice to hospital managers, clinicians, other staff groups and patients in the Trust and other specified organisations. The postholder may perform other qualified expert roles as appropriate to their qualifications and experience, such as Radioactive Waste Adviser and Medical Physics Expert.
The postholder will provide scientific leadership and professional and managerial direction to radiation safety services across the Trust and other organisations with which the Department has contractual agreements.
The postholder will operate at the highest levels of expertise and will be able to provide advice on the interpretation and application of legislation and standards to bodies at a national level. The postholder will keep up to date with new technologies and will be able to develop and lead activities in all areas of the service.
The postholder will participate in the teaching of students and trainees up to and including Masters degree level and will lead and contribute to research and development.
About us
MPCE has around 200 staff with a net annual budget of around �13M and income of �1.7M from external contracts. It provides comprehensive scientific & technical services to the Trust and external organisations. Its large Radiotherapy Physics & Engineering group works closely with Radiotherapy to deliver high quality patient care on state-of-the-art equipment, supported by technical staff undertaking servicing of treatment machines. Imaging is supported by Radiation Safety and Radiology Physics, Non-ionising Radiation, Nuclear Medicine Physics and MR Physics. Wider patient, staff and public safety is addressed by the Radiation Safety and Non-Ionising Radiation sections which also check and calibrate equipment for many external customers. Medical Equipment Management Services are provided to an extensive range of medical devices across the Trust, providing device repair, modification and development backed up by well-equipped Mechanical Engineering Workshops and a Clinical Engineering section dealing with regulatory and trust wide policy issues. The Clinical Scientific Computing team supports development, evaluation and deployment of digital health technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence (AI). As part of the King's Health Partners AHCS, Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering has close links to King's College London and to Medical Engineering and Physics colleagues at Kings College Hospital, for service, teaching and research.
