The East Anglian Regional Radiation Protection Service (EARRPS) provides scientific and technical advisory services in the field of radiation protection and diagnostic radiology physics to a range of clients across the region. We are looking for an Senior Clinical Technologist to join our team and support the delivery of a range of service aspects depending on skills and experience.

The service promotes systems of work that ensure the safety of patients, visitors and staff when using ionising and non-ionising sources of radiation such as x-rays, radioactive materials, lasers and UV cabinets. A wide range of services are provided including, imaging equipment performance testing and optimisation, radiation facility design and environmental monitoring, patient radiation dose assessment, regulatory audits and advice, instrument calibration, radioactive waste management and, teaching and training.

A passion for service delivery is essential. You should have excellent communication skills and a willingness to engage in multidisciplinary teaching and training. You will be required to travel throughout the region and will frequently work at other hospitals and client sites within the region. You will operate within both our HSE-recognised RPA Body and our ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System.

To apply for this role you should be a Clinical Technologist registered with the RCT with significant experience of working in a Radiation Protection or Diagnostic Radiology field.

Main duties of the job

• Provide high quality radiation protection services to users of x-ray systems, sealed and unsealed radioactive sources, and non-ionising radiation. This includes routine and commissioning equipment performance testing on on specialist x-ray imaging equipment, as well as auditing and advising clients on compliance with regulatory requirements in relation to radiation safety.
• Carry out intercomparisons and calibrations on a wide range of radiation detectors, and investigate and diagnose faults. Act as a Qualified Person under current radiation protection legislation to authorise radiation monitor calibration certificates.
• Within an appropriate scope of practice, take responsibility for their own work as well as that of others working under their supervision including the review of reports completed by other scientists or technologists.

Qualifications

Essential

• oBSc or Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) in Clinical Technology, Medical Physics, Physics (or other similar subject).
• Registration as a Clinical Technologist

Desirable

• Completion of IPEM Clinical Technologist training scheme, with specialism in Radiation Physics.

Experience

Essential

• Significant experience in the use of testing equipment employed to measure the safety and performance of x-ray imaging equipment and in interpreting results.
• Experience of working with and calibrating a range of radiation monitors.
• Significant experience of radiation protection in a range of disciplines, including diagnostic radiology.
• Experience of working in a healthcare environment.
• Experience of being able to interact with a range of staff from a variety of backgrounds.

Desirable

• Experience of radiation safety aspects of work with radioactive materials and non-ionising radiations.
• Experience of working within a Quality Management System such as ISO9001:2015.

Knowledge

Essential

• Knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of state of the art imaging equipment.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines. [e.g. IRR, IR(ME)R, IPEM guidelines etc].
• oKnowledge of radiation physics and patient and staff risks arising from ionising radiation exposure.
