We have an exciting opportunity to join our friendly and dedicated Haematology team within the West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, as a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist - Haematology Training Lead.
This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week) and we welcome applications from Biomedical Scientists with substantial experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusionand evidence of training and coaching skills.

Job responsibilities
The Haematology Training Lead will liaise closely with other Band 7 BMS Team Leaders and Managers within Blood Sciences, namely Haematology, Blood Transfusion, and Immunology.
They will also liaise with the Blood Sciences Manager and the Medical, Nursing and Phlebotomy Staff within the department.
The post holder will be accountable to the Consultant Heads of Haematology & Blood Transfusion in relation to the clinical aspects of the work.
They will lead on the development of competency assessments for all grades of staff to meet the standards of ISO 15189:2012/2022 accreditation.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an aptitude for encouraging staff development.
The successful candidate will have experience in, and a thorough understanding of, the requirements to meet Certificate of Competency for HCPC Registration and the IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios.
There is a full 24/7 hours acute/urgent service at Watford General Hospital and a Monday to Friday non-urgent service provided at the Hemel Hempstead site.
The successful candidate is expected to act as a Band 7 Team Lead when required, but will be allocated approximately 60% of their time in the Training Lead role.
On-Call participation is a requirement of the role.

Main duties of the job
The main responsibilities are:
- To learn and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of both routine and developmental work within the laboratory and maintain competency levels through annual reassessment protocol.
- To ensure that work is carried out efficiently/accurately in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures and to bring any problems to the attention of a BMS Section Manager that may arise during the course of their duty.
- To perform analysis of National External Quality Assessment Schemes [NEQAS] and Internal Quality Assurance Schemes [IQAS] and to ensure that appropriate corrective action is taken where and whenever necessary.
- To monitor, record and advise on the correct interpretation of results, to check, authorise and release results according to the departmental policy.
- To follow departmental maintenance protocols to ensure that equipment performs at an optimal level and take the appropriate corrective action when required.
- To audit portfolios following planned schedules of training and education and to co-ordinate other BMS educational activities such as practical projects.

- Relevant Degree HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist.
- Fellowship of IBMS, MSc or equivalent.
- Participation in a CPD Scheme.
- IBMS Training Management Qualification or equivalent experience.
Knowledge
Essential
- Exemplary working knowledge of Haematology.
- Knowledge of Quality Management Systems including use of software e.g. Q-Pulse / Lab Passport.
- Knowledge of audit, Root Cause Analysis and CAPA.
Experience
Essential
- Significant post HCPC Registered experience commensurate with grade. Excellent analytical skills
- Excellent communication skills.
- Independent problem-solving/troubleshooting skills.
- IT and Data analysis including audit.
