The Haematology ANP role is an advanced cancer nursing role that crosses traditional professional boundaries, requiring a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making. The post holder will work as part of a team of Haematology ANPs and SHOs providing a 24 hour service, 365 days a year.

At night the post holder will manage clinical care in partnership with a dedicated SHO and SpR, as part of the on-call medical team for inpatient cancer services. In the day, the post holder will continue to support and work collectively with the on- call medical team, managing and triaging care of inpatient haematology patients, participating in Ward Rounds, performing relevant clinical procedures, attending outpatient clinics and providing care in day care settings.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical assessment of patients with a range of haematological a oncological disorders and initiate medical treatment or escalation as required.
  • Document clear medical histories and treatments to a standard that would be suitable for medico-legal scrutiny
  • Investigate and arrange investigations for patients as clinically indicated and as per UCLH policies and local policy
  • Accurately order and interpret a range of investigations, with reference to local and national protocols and guidelines. Make treatment decisions based on the interpretation and escalate to Haem SHO/SpR/Consultant if any concerns
  • Administer medications under Patient Group Directives or prescribe within the individual's scope of practice if a Qualified Independent Non-Medical prescriber
  • Non-medical authorisation of appropriate blood products once undertaken local training
  • Perform specific procedures within scope of own practice, demonstrating safe clinical practice, high level of skill and using sound evidence and rationale e.g. bone marrow aspirate & trephines, lumbar punctures, etc.
  • Refer patients to other specialist teams as required
  • Plan for patient discharges in a timely manner to minimise delays.
  • Initiate change effectively in response to clinical or organizational demands, demonstrating ability to plan solutions to complex problems
  • Triage, assess and manage patients in daycare settings
  • Work with specialist Haematologists general and subspecialty Haematology outpatient clinics

Person Specification

Knowledge & Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse Part 1, 2 or relevant section of the register
  • Relevant post-registration programme
  • Advanced Physical Assessment Course
  • Non medical Prescriber


Desirable

  • Teaching/Assessment programme
  • Leadership development programme


Experience

Essential

  • Significant relevant post registration experience in cancer nursing
  • Completed/completing Masters Degree or Honours Degree in Nursing, midwifery, research or ethics


Clinical

Essential

  • Significant experience and competence in intravenous therapy including cannulation, venepuncture.
  • Experience in advanced clinical assessment
  • Experience in independently prescribing medications


Desirable

  • Experience in central venous access


Quality Assurance

Essential

  • Demonstrates understanding of principles of Clinical Governance, e.g. risk management, audit
  • Commitment to quality initiatives, e.g. Nursing & Midwifery strategy, Trust top 10 objectives, CNO 10 key roles and relevant NSFs
  • Experience of developing standards, guidelines and policies
  • Experience in audit and evaluation of practice services
