Main duties of the job
Poor mental health among children and young people has been described as an epidemic and an escalating crisis nationwide especially since the lockdown following Covid-19 pandemic. Here at the Royal Free Hospital we are working with partner agencies and commissioners to transform services, particularly to manage acute presentations at hospital emergency departments and community hubs. The role of the NCL CAMHS Crisis Clinician is pivotal to delivering innovative models of care whilst contributing to assessment and discharge planning of children and young people who present with mental health crisis.
The successful candidate will be a registered mental health professional or mental health nurse with extensive clinical experience in CAMHS. They will work within a multi-disciplinary CAMHS team to ensure prompt assessment of children and young people under the age of 18 who present with urgent mental health needs. The successful applicant will have substantial experience of CAMHS in an acute environment and be able to work across geographical and professional boundaries. A flexible approach is essential to facilitate a timely response to acute service demands.
There are a number of opportunities available to the successful candidate including training and support in undertaking quality improvement initiatives.

- Evidence of well developed clinical skills and knowledge in CAMHS.
- Working knowledge in at least one model of therapeutic work (e.g. Systemic, CBT, SFT, Psychodynamic).
- Ability to work effectively across organisational boundaries
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Teaching skills in clinical settings.
- Proven qualities in sustaining the mental, emotional and physical demands of specialised therapeutic work with disturbed and distressed adolescents and their families/care networks
- Capacity to deal with working conditions that may occasionally involve verbal abuse and frequent exposure to highly emotive material such as child abuse and family breakdown.
- Ability to manage the multiple demands complex clinical environment.
- Awareness of current national guidelines and policies in the field of CAMHS.
- Knowledge of legislation including the Mental Health Act 1983 in relation to children and adolescents including safeguarding children and young people, child protection procedures and policies.
- Good computer skills and knowledge of patient management systems.
- Accurate record keeping.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
