Sunflower House (SFH) is a well-established Tier 4 children's mental health inpatient service and part of Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.
It is commissioned by NHS England to provide specialist assessment, treatment, T4 Consultation and Multi-Disciplinary opinion across Cheshire, Wirral and Merseyside but also accepts patients from across and outside of England where appropriate services cannot be provided regionally.

- A primary diagnosis of mental illness including children with neurodevelopmental disorders (ASD and mild/borderline co-morbid learning difficulties), physical disabilities or those with social care problems as secondary needs.
- Severe and complex needs that cannot be safely managed within Tier 3 CAMHS
- Severe and complex needs that cannot be adequately assessed within a Tier 3 environment.
- May require detention under the Mental Health Act.

- Leadership and support to a group of clinical staff including nurses, healthcare support workers and trainees
- Young people up to age 13 presenting with complex and comorbid mental health difficulties
- Clinical and day to day operational experience and leadership across the shift
- Shift work - days/nights/weekends - band 6 cover across shifts

Clinical Skills
- Demonstrate ability to engage proactively with patients and their families/ carers/ significant others to build positive working alliances.
- Ability to work with assessed needs embracing the wishes of the patient within a Tier 4 specialist CAMHS inpatient setting.
- Able to make systematic and comprehensive assessment/re-assessment of patient need in conjunction with the wider multi-disciplinary team, employing appropriate assessment tools, and within the CPA framework enabling the development of planned Tier 4 inpatient care that incorporates all aspects of the patients needs. (This will be in conjunction with identified case manager).
- Able to facilitate assessment of Carers needs and implement appropriate support plans under the direction and support of the unit Social Worker.
- Demonstrates the skills and knowledge essential for developing nursing risk management plans, and timely review of the risk management plans, identifying opportunities for positive risk taking in conjunction with the patient, Wider MDT and patients carers/relatives/significant others.
- Has up to date knowledge and skills in relation to role and responsibilities of the practitioner under the Mental Health Act 1983 and its application in practice and to be able to support junior qualified staff in the same way.
- Actively engages with the Case manager under CPA to identify appropriate resources to support the patients care package within the hospital setting and within their local environment.
- Works to develop effective multidisciplinary relationships through skilled communication with the unit and the wider CAMHS network including NHSE as required.
- Shows ability to effectively evaluate plans of care in collaboration with the patient as an ongoing process and make recommendations for changes in the care package.
- Work as a Senior Nurse in a Unit area ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, their families and visitors
- Applies relevant policies and statutory requirements within the unit and hospital framework including governance and communicates these requirements to the wider team.
- Respects and applies the requirements of equality and diversity, promoting and role modelling these across the team.
- Acts as a role model to promote a culture of learning development vision.
- Implements, monitors and evaluates therapeutic interventions within an overall care programme, enabling patients to develop coping strategies within the context of Positive Behavioural Support.
- Is named nurse for a small group of patients, acting as Associate nurse for colleagues when on duty, and is a regular shift leader. Who will be able to offer support and guidance to band 5 staff in the delivery and development of care.
- Work alongside the Case Manager, acting as an associate in the coordination of care with internal and external multi agency network including NHSE and the CCG where appropriate.
- Provides Clinical and managerial Supervision to a group of defined nursing staff
- Undertakes Lead roles for the unit, as agreed with the Matron
- Deputises for the Matron/Service lead as required
- Adheres to all National and local standards, policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates expertise in analysing and reflecting upon their own clinical practice and that of others in all aspects of care giving to young people and their families/carers.
- Supports the Matron/Head of Service in developing sustainable services in line with national specifications, local implementation requirements and a set financial envelope.
- Promote and introduce systems to continuously improve quality of care, drawing on national and local guidance, and able to lead on key elements in particular CQC and QNIC requirements.

- Actively works with the Matron and Head of Service to implement the vision for Tier 4 inpatient care. Including new ways of working and associated outreach and outreach plus when required.

- Acts as a role model in the clinical arena for other staff.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective clinical and managerial supervision of the shift co-ordinators and junior staff on the team.

Management Skills
- Demonstrates the commitment to develop the range of skills required to deputise for the Matron
- Demonstrates the skills of effective time management and ability to prioritise competing demands. Able to work positively with patients and/or carers who express verbal concerns or complaints about the service and attempt early and effective resolution in conjunction with the PALS Service. (Would seek support from Matron and Head of Service). Plus follows Trust policy and procedures in the management of complaints and reporting of same.
- Is cognisant of the policy and procedural guidance following a Serious Untoward Incident on the unit and able to prepare a clear and concise report as required.

- Actively assists and at times take a lead approach to assist the Matron/Head of Service in the management of change, taking account of the views of patients, carers and the unit MDT.

- Or registered Paediatric Nurse with additional training and experience within an Inpatient mental health setting
- Substantial post registration clinical, leadership and managerial experience

- Evidence of appropriate continuing professional development activity to maintain up-to-date knowledge and on-going competence in all aspects of the role
